Tigers Advance Three to Round of 16 Singles at Cissie Leary Invitational
September 22, 2006 | Women's Tennis
It was an impressive day for the Princeton women's tennis team at Penn's Cissie Leary Invitational Friday as three Tiger singles players reached the Round of 16 and two doubles teams made their way to the quarterfinals.
Both of Princeton's seeded singles players, freshmen Blakely Ashley and Melissa Saiontz, will play in Saturday's final 16. Saiontz easily dispatched Minnesota's Danielle Mousseau 6-3 and 6-0 in the second round after getting a bye in the first round, while Ashley won a third-set tiebreak over Ohio State's Sonia Ruzimovsky in the first round and then came back later to win in similar fashion in a 13-11 third-set tiebreak over Temple's Yuri Kurashima. Tiebreaks were played in lieu of entire sets.
Junior Ivana King also advanced to the Round of 16, easily defeating Cornell's Tamara John in the first round and then taking a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Ida Malmburg from Minnesota in the Round of 32.
In doubles, Princeton's freshmen team of Ashley and Saiontz won matches against teams from Cornell and Penn State to advance to the Round of 8 on Saturday. King then joined Sarah Huah to win a second-round doubles match in a tiebreak to also advance to the quarters.
Huah was a first-round winner in the singles draw, losing just one game in a dispatch of Arizona's Tina Razloznik, but fell to Harvard's Lena Litvak in a third-set tiebreak in the second round.
