September 23, 2006 | Women's Tennis
Princeton freshman Melissa Saiontz advanced to the semifinals of her first collegiate tournament after two impressive wins Saturday at Penn's Cissie Leary Invitational.
Saiontz lost a total of six games in two straight-set wins. In the Round of 16, she knocked off Arizona's Natalia Toporowska by scores of 6-2 and 6-1. Later in the day in the quarterfinals, Saiontz dispensed Temple's Radka Ferancova by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.
The semifinals and championship match take place on Sunday.
Princeton's two other singles players in the round of 16 both lost tough matches on Saturday. Freshman Blakely Ashley dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Arizona's Juliette Mavroleon, while Ivana King played a strong second set against Penn's Yulia Rivelis but ended up on the wrong end of a 6-0, 7-5 score.
Both of Princeton's doubles teams that reached the quarterfinals of the 32-team draw fell on Saturday. Both King and Sarah Huah and Ashley and Saiontz lost to teams from host Penn in the final eight.
