Women's Golf Posts Strong Start at Yale Fall Invitational
September 30, 2006 | Women's Golf
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Halfway through the Yale Fall Invitational, the Princeton women's golf team stands in second place, three shots behind Harvard. Annika Welander, who posted the first win of her collegiate career last weekend at the Princeton Invitational, is tied for second. The one-two standing reverses the finish at the Orange and Black's home course last week, where Princeton bested Harvard by 18 shots.
Welander's opening-round 76 (6-over) ties her with Harvard's Sarah Harvey and Yale's Natasha Spackey one shot back of the Crimson's Emily Balmert. Sharla Cloutier and rookie Michelle Grilli tied for sixth with a 7-over 77, while Marlowe Boukis and Susannah Aboff are tied for 14th at +9 with 79s in their opening rounds.
Cloutier led the field with four birdies on the day and helped the Tigers to a tournament-best nine birdies through round one. Princeton stands three shots ahead of Yale in the 11-team field.
Tournament play wraps up Sunday.
