Women?s Soccer Looks for First Win at Penn Tournament
September 06, 2006 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton women's soccer team (0-1) will travel to Philadelphia this weekend to face Richmond (0-4) at 5 p.m. Friday and Hofstra (3-1) at noon Sunday in what will be the second and third games of the young 2006 campaign.
Last time out
Last Saturday, the Tigers braved a soggy evening on Mercer County Community College's turf field but still fell short to Boston University, 2-0, in the season-opener.
All-time series
The Tigers have never faced Hofstra and have met with Richmond only once. In 2000, the Spiders handed Princeton a 3-1 loss in Virginia's capital.
Virginia is for lovers... of soccer
The Tigers will face three teams from Virginia over the next two weekend. After taking on the Spiders in neutral territory, Princeton visits Julie Shackford's alma mater, the College of William & Mary, to face the host Tribe and Virginia Commonwealth Sept. 15 and 17.
And making their Tiger debuts...
Four freshmen played in their first collegiate game Saturday as Marci Pasenello, Vicki Anagnostopoulos, Melissa Seitz and Caitlin Alev all saw time. Alev was the only freshman to start.
More starting
Sophomore Sarah Peteraf and senior Amanda Ferranti made the first starts of their careers Saturday. While Alev has started the only game of her young career, sophomore Taylor Numann is the only other Tiger to have started every game of her tenure. She was in the lineup all 16 games in 2005 and continued the streak Saturday.
On the Spiders
Richmond is also looking for its first win of the year after falling to West Virginia, Rutgers, VCU and James Madison to start the season. The team has been outscored 10-3 on the year with two goals coming from rookie Kristen Stalter and one from sophomore Julia Bizer. Sophomore Kate Hudson (1.72 GAA) and freshman Erin Iman (3.57) have split time in goal.
On the Pride
While the Spiders are struggling, Hofstra has won three games since a 4-0 loss to Connecticut to start the season. An NCAA tournament team a year ago, Hofstra has gotten by Fairfield, Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut by a combined score of 6-1. Junior Marie Curtin is the only multi-goal scorer for the Pride with four other players logging a goal each. Sophomore Krystal Robens has spent seven of the eight halves in goal, accruing a goals-against average of 1.43.
Burke-ians reunite
Princeton senior captain Christina Costantino and Hofstra sophomore Sara Gulley are both from Burke, Va., a suburb of Washington, D.C. They figure to play against each other as Costantino started the Tiger opener and Gulley has started all four games in the midfield for the Pride.
Rhodes to prosperity
The Tigers have won three in a row on Penn's home pitch, Rhodes Field. Before a 3-2 win over the Quakers last year, Princeton knocked off Villanova and Vanderbilt at Penn's tournament in 2004.
Buzzing about rankings
In SoccerBuzz.com's regional rankings, Boston University, Princeton's last opponent, is ranked No. 4 in this week's poll. Hofstra is ranked No. 7. The Tigers are eighth in the Mid-Atlantic poll. Both of next week's opponents, VCU (fifth) and William & Mary (seventh) are ranked just ahead of the Tigers in the region.
