This Week's Storylines The Opponents Individual Notes Odd & Ends
Heading into the Break
The Princeton men's hockey team hosts Ivy and ECACHL rivals Yale and Brown this weekend at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton's final weekend before its two-week layoff for final exams.
Last Time Out
Princeton avenged its loss to Quinnipiac last Saturday by defeating its travel-partner 4-2 on Tuesday night on the road. Sophomore Brett Wilson broke a 1-1 tie with his second-period goal and the Tigers never looked back in the win. Freshman goaltender Zane Kalemba made 34 saves in the game and the other three Princeton goals came from junior Landis Stankievech, senior Darroll Powe and freshman Mark Magnowski.
Still Going Strong
Princeton's win on Tuesday night moved the Tigers to 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, a stretch that began with a 3-3 tie at Dartmouth the Friday after Thanksgiving. Princeton is 4-1-1 in league play and 3-1-0 in non-league action during that span. This is Princeton's best 10-game stretch since Princeton went 8-1-1 early in the 1998-99 season.
The .500 Mark
Princeton's win on Tuesday night brought the Tigers back to the .500 mark for the second time this season. Sitting at 8-8-2 the Tigers will look to go above .500 this weekend.
Too Close for Comfort
If it seems like most Princeton games come down to a single goal, it is because they do. Twelve of Princeton's 18 games this season have been decided by a goal or ended in a tie. Of the other six games, five were decided by two goal margins and one had a four goal margin. Both Quinnipiac games were decided by two goals, but featured empty-net goals for the winning teams.
Scoring With Consistency
After having its run of games with two or more goals scored snapped last Saturday night, the Tigers rebounded with a four-goal outing on Tuesday night. Princeton was one of four teams in the nation to score at least two goals in every game entering last Saturday. That night, both Princeton and Cornell were held under two goals, leaving Maine and New Hampshire as the only teams remaining to have scored two or more goals in each game.
But...
Princeton is the only team in the nation to have at least two goals scored against it in every game this season. The Tigers have gone 29 games dating back to a 3-0 shutout of Cornell last January since they have held an opponent to less than two goals.
Interesting Start to the Series
Princeton and Quinnipiac have split their two season series as travel-partners. Quinnipiac has won both of the games play at Princeton, while the Tigers have won both games hosted by Quinnipiac. Neither teams has won a game in the series on its home ice.
Four Straight Wins
Princeton's four-game win streak that ended on Saturday was its longest since the 1998-99 Tigers defeated Vermont, Army, Cornell and Colgate in January of 1999.
Home Stretch
This weekend begins a three-game stretch of games played by the Tigers at home. The run starts with Brown and Yale and finishes on Jan. 29 against Robert Morris.
The Series With Yale
Princeton and Yale have met 222 times over the years in a series that dates back to 1901. Yale leads the all-time series 117-96-9 and Princeton leads 43-37-4 at home. Last season the two teams split their series with each team winning on their opponent's home ice. Yale won the first meeting 6-1 at Baker Rink in early January, while Princeton won 4-2 at Yale in the regular-season finale in late February. The teams have split their games in each of the past three seasons.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale brings a 7-6-2 overall record into the weekend and is 4-4-0 in ECACHL play. The Bulldogs beat Brown 4-3 last Saturday to put a stop to a seven-game winless streak. Yale has wins over New Hampshire, Colgate, Dartmouth and Harvard to its credit this season.
The Last Meeting
Patrick Neundorfer scored twice and Eric Leroux made 39 saves as the Tigers picked up a 4-2 win at Yale on Feb. 25, 2006. Current sophomore Lee Jubinville and senior Kevin Westgarth also scored in the win.
The Series With Brown
Princeton trails its all-time series with Brown 52-77-6 and is 22-33-4 in the series at home. The Tigers and Bears skated to a pair of ties last season as the score was 2-2 in Princeton and 3-3 in Providence. The previous season the teams split their games, with both teams winning in the opponent's building.
Scouting the Bears
Brown is 7-5-3 overall and 3-4-1 in the ECACHL entering the weekend. The Bears had a three-game unbeaten streak snapped with last Saturday's loss at Yale. The Bears sport the league's top defensive numbers, limiting opponents to an average of 2.47 goals per game.
The Last Meeting
Senior Kevin Westgarth scored two goals as the Tigers and Bears skated to a 3-3 tie on February 24, 2006 at Meehan Auditorium. Westgarth's first goal came with seven seconds left in the second period to tie the game at 1-1, then the teams traded third period goals to reach the 3-3 final. Mark Masters also scored for Princeton.
Non-League Schedule Update
Princeton is 3-2-1 in non-league play this season following last weekend's sweep. The Tigers opened the year with a tie and loss to Bentley and split with Alabama-Huntsville in early December. Robert Morris is Princeton's last non-league opponent of this season and the teams meet on Jan. 29 at Baker Rink. Last season Princeton was 3-4-0 in non-league play, defeating UAH, Notre Dame and Denver.
Team Notes
All Even, Home and Away
Princeton's overall record of 8-8-2 is at .500, and that is evenly split at home and away. Princeton is 4-4-0 on its home ice, 4-4-1 on the road and 0-0-1 at neutral sites this season.
On the Home Ice
Princeton had won its last four games at home before Saturday night's loss. Princeton was winless in its first three home games of the season and is now 4-4-0 at home this season. Princeton closed last season by going 4-1-1 in its final six home games.
Ranked Teams
Princeton's win on Tuesday was its second this season over a ranked team. The Tigers are 2-2-1 in their five games against ranked teams, defeating Clarkson and Quinnipiac, losing to Cornell and Quinnipiac and tying Dartmouth. Clarkson, ranked 11th at the time, is the highest ranked team Princeton has played. Clarkson is currently ranked ninth in the nation.
Special Teams
Twenty-five of Princeton's 57 goals this season have come on special teams. All four of Princeton's goals at Quinnipiac on Tuesday were scored at even strength. Princeton has 22 power-play goals and three shorthanded goals this season.
On the Power Play
Operating at a 18.8% efficiency, Princeton's power-play currently ranks third in the ECACHL and 19th in the nation.
Staying Out of the Box
Princeton is the fourth-least penalized team in the nation, averaging 12.4 penalty minutes per game and the least penalized team in the ECAC Hockey League. Princeton is averaging three penalties less per game this season than last and the Tigers average has dropped following each of the last six games. Here is a list of the four least penalized teams in the nation.
55. Princeton 12.4
57. Massachusetts 12.0
58. St. Cloud State 10.8
59. UMass-Lowell 10.6
With a Two Man Advantage
Princeton converted on its first 5-on-3 power play in the Rensselaer win. The Tigers had been held goalless in nine previous chances, but had allowed five two-man advantage goals. Princeton also scored with the two-man advantage against Minnesota State and is now 2-for-11 in 5-on-3s while opponents are 5-for-11 against Princeton, including a chance for Quinnipiac on Saturday.
Lots of Shots
Shots were even in Princeton's latest game for the second time this season. Princeton is 2-0-0 in those games. The game marked the fourth-straight game that Princeton did not outshoot its opponent after garnering more shots than its opponents in 12 of the first 14 games this season.Princeton has outshot 12 of 18 opponents this season, been outshot four times and had shots even twice. Last season Princeton outshot its opponents in 13 of 31 games.
Spreading the Puck Around
Princeton has received points this season from 20 of its 24 skaters. Seventeen different players have scored goals and 17 players have tallied assists. Every player that has appeared in at least half the games has recorded a point.
Immediate Impact
Princeton's freshman class has had an immediate impact. Eight of the nine skaters have recorded a point and seven of those have scored goals.
Scoring More…
Princeton has scored 81 goals in each of the past two seasons. Last season the Tigers did it despite the graduation of two of its top-three scorers from the previous season. That number is 19 more than the total of 62 that Princeton scored in 31 games two seasons ago. Princeton is on pace to score 104 goals in 31 games this year.
Shorthanded Goals
Princeton has tallied three shorthanded goals this season, the most recent coming against Rensselaer. Princeton was held without a shorthanded goal last season.
Leading the Way
Senior captain Darroll Powe scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season on Tuesday night. It was also his second-game winning goal of the season and he is one of three Tigers with two game winners this season.
Right There With Him
Sophomore Lee Jubinville set up Powe's tally on Tuesday night for his 10th assist of the season. He remains tied with Powe with 16 points for the team lead in overall scoring. Thirteen of his 16 points have come in league games, which makes him third in the league in conference scoring.
First Freshman
Freshman Mark Magnowski had a goal and an assist against Quinnipiac and in doing so, collected his fourth two-point game of the 2006-07 season. His 12 points place him fourth on the team in scoring.
Breaking Out
Sophomore Brett Wilson scored the go-ahead goal on Tuesday night as he gave Princeton a lead it would not relinquish. Wilson has five points in his last three games and is tied for fourth on the team in scoring.
Closing in on 100
Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller picked up an assist on Wilson's goal against Quinnipiac. Goeckner-Zoeller, who has points in 12 of 17 games this season sits five points away from reaching the 100-point mark for his career. The last Princeton players to reach 100 points were Jeff Halpern and Scott Bertoli who both reached the mark in the 1998-99 season.
Two For Three
Goeckner-Zoeller and junior Kyle Hagel both had assists on Tuesday night and have both registered assists in two of their last three games played.
Another Stellar Job in Goal
Freshman Zane Kalemba recorded his fourth 30+ save performance as he limited Quinnipiac to two goals on 36 shots on Tuesday night. Kalemba lowered his goals-against average to 2.36 and raised his save percentage to .907 with the win, his seventh of the season.
Polling Station
Princeton was picked to finish 10th by both the coaches and the media in the ECACHL preseason polls for the second straight season. Princeton currently sits in a tie for third in the league standings. The Tigers finished ninth in the ECAC Hockey League standings a season ago. Yale and Brown were chosen in a tie for 11th in the coaches poll, while Yale was 11th in the media poll and Brown was 12th. They currently sit eighth and ninth respectively in the league standings.
Around the ECACHL
Eleven league teams will be in action this coming weekend with only Harvard taking the weekend off. Union and Rensselaer will play a home-and-home series, while Colgate and Cornell visit St. Lawrence and Clarkson. Princeton and Quinnipiac host Yale and Brown, and Dartmouth meets New Hampshire in non-league action.
On the Horizon
Princeton takes the next 15 days off for final exams before returning to action on Jan. 29 against Robert Morris. The Tigers resume league play the following weekend when they travel to Brown and Yale and start the playoff push in search of home ice.
