January 15, 2007 | Women's Track and Field
Mia Swenson and Jolee VanLeuven took the top two spots in the 5,000 meter race and Jess Kloss won the pole vault as the Tiger women's track team competed at the 2007 New Balance NYC Gotham Cup at the Armory in New York City Friday.
Princeton also won the distance medley relay event at the competition thanks to four impressive freshmen, who finished the race in 11:55.48. Christy Johnson, Maria Fasolino, Liz Costello and Alexa Glencer won that race by more than 25 seconds.
Powerful Villanova won the 4X800 relay, but the Tigers were second in 9:18.15 behind juniors Karen Aherne, Mawusi Arnett, Kathryn Dennison and Heather Iatauro.
Swenson and VanLeuven simply dominated the 5,000 meters, finishing in 16:53 and 16:55 respectively. Both times were more than 40 seconds better than the third-place finisher.
Kloss, a sophomore, was the highest-seeded pole vaulter heading into the meet and did not disappoint, winning the competition with a leap of 3.60 meters.
Costello also had a strong performance individually in the 1,000 meters, finishing third in 2:51.67 behind two runners from Villanova.
