January 29, 2007 | Men's Tennis
Princeton freshman Charlie Brosens won the "B" flight singles at this weekend's Columbia Men's Tennis Invitational, defeating Manhattan's Zoltan Bus by scores of 7-6 and 6-1 in the championship match Sunday at Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
Brosens came back from a set down in both his first round and quarterfinal matches in the 16-player bracket, defeating FDU's Pritt Gross and Columbia's Paul Ratchford in three sets to advance to Sunday's semifinal. His win over Ratchford came via a third-set tiebreak after winning the second set 7-5.
In the semifinal, played the same day as that three-setter, Brosens defeated another Columbia player, Mike Accordino, by scores of 7-5 and 6-2.
Princeton junior Jonathan Leslie also advanced to the "B" flight semifinals, defeating Tom Santoro from Yale and Peter Kung from Cornell in the first two rounds, but fell to Bus in a tight match 7-5 in the third set in the semis.
In the "A" singles bracket, freshman George Carpeni recovered to beat Yale's MIke Caldwell in three sets in the first round before falling to a player from St. John's in the next round on Saturday.
Princeton begins its dual-match season this Sunday, Feb. 4, hosting Central Florida at 11 a.m. at Jadwin Gym.
