Men's Volleyball Gets Swept By No. 2 Cal-Irvine
January 31, 2007 | Men's Volleyball
The timing was all wrong for the Princeton men's volleyball team Tuesday night. Not only was it playing its second match of the season against the No. 2 team in the country, but it was playing that team coming off its only loss of the season. Cal-Irvine, the top team in the nation until a loss last weekend against No. 5 Pepperdine, swept Princeton 3-0 to improve to 10-1. The Tigers, who continue to play a variety of lineups as they continue preparation for the upcoming EIVA season, fell to 0-2.
Despite hanging in for much of the first game, Princeton was unable to secure a win there. The second and third games belonged solely to the hosts, which scored a 30-26, 30-18, 30-18 over the Tigers. UCI's Matt Webber hit .892 with 16 kills on 19 attempts without an error, while senior outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky recorded two service aces to become the UCI career leader with 98.
Sophomore middle Mike Vincent led Princeton with seven kills, while classmate Brandon Denham had a match-high 25 assists. Reid Joseph, who missed all of last season with an injury, led the Tigers with five digs and killed balls on three of four attacks.
Princeton will resume action Wednesday night at Cal-San Diego. Live stats will be available on the school's web site, ucsdtritons.com.
