Women's Swimming/Diving Opens '07 With Rout Of James Madison
January 06, 2007 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Princeton hit double-digits in wins, including three from freshman Alicia Aemisegger, to win a showdown with James Madison Saturday afternoon. The meet, which also featured exhibition swims from Bucknell, was the first of the 2007 portion of the season for Princeton. Diver Katie Giarra also had a strong meet for Princeton, sweeping both the 1- and 3-meter events.
The Tigers got off on the right foot, claiming the 200 medley relay in 1:50.38. Rebecca Nyquist, Aemisegger, Kelly Hannigan and Sobenna George earned the victory for Princeton, which wouldn't look back following the win. Aemisegger took the first individual swim with one of her specialties, the 200 IM. Her time of 2:00.99 beat teammate Lisa Hamming by nearly two seconds and the rest of the field by nearly five seconds. Aemisegger would come back with a pair of sprint wins; she took the 50 breast in 30.46 and the 25 free in 11.66.
Hamming earned a win in the 150 IM with a time of 1:35.20, and Justina DiFazio followed it up by edging teammate George in the 50 free (24.35). Courtney Kilkuts also claimed an IM victory, and the six-Tiger team of Nikki Laffel, Sandy Zaeh, Brittany Delgado, Kristen Arey, Suzanne Rossi and DiFazio won the 350 free relay.
Giarra led a 1-2-3 Princeton finish in both diving competitions. Her score of 263.18 in the 1-meter competition put her atop a field that included No. 2 Shelby Rudd and No. 3 Michelle DeMond. Giarra defeated DeMond and Charlotte Jones with a score of 297.83 in the 3-meter competition.
