Men's Soccer Visits Harvard Saturday Afternoon
October 18, 2007 | Men's Soccer
Five weekends and five games will determine the Ivy League fate of the 2007 Princeton men's soccer team, and that stretch begins with a big challenge Saturday when the Tigers visit Cambridge and 11th-ranked Harvard for a 2:30 p.m. game at Ohiri Field.
The 2006 Ivy champs and the Tigers are both 1-1 in the league after two weekends, with each team's loss coming in overtime to Brown, making Saturday's game in Cambridge key in remaining near the top of the league standings.
Princeton (3-7-2) got a solid result Wednesday night at regionally-ranked St. John's, getting a second-half goal and key defensive play from freshman defender Josh Walburn on the way to a 1-1 tie with the Red Storm.
The Tigers have now lost just once in their last six games (3-1-2). Princeton earned its Ivy win last Saturday at home against Columbia, getting goals late in each half from Kyle McHugh in a 2-0 victory over the Lions.
McHugh leads Princeton with five goals this season, while freshman Teddy Schneider has three. Six Princeton freshmen have started at least four games this season, including goalie Sean Lynch, who has earned the start in each of his team's last eight games.
Harvard (8-2-2), also No. 3 in the NSCAA Northeast regional rankings behind top-ranked UConn and Brown, also played Wednesday and tied Holy Cross 1-1. Andre Akpan had a goal for the ninth straight game for the Crimson, who have scored 27 goals in 12 games this season.
The teams played to a 1-1 tie in Princeton's last visit to Ohiri Field in 2005. Princeton's last win in Cambridge came during the 1999 Ivy League championship season.
Saturday's game will be the nightcap in a soccer doubleheader that begins with the Princeton-Harvard women's soccer game at noon. The Princeton field hockey team (noon) and football team (12:30) are also playing in Cambridge on Saturday.
