Men's Soccer Concludes Homestand With Adelphi Wednesday Night
October 02, 2007 | Men's Soccer
The Princeton men's soccer team looks for its third straight shutout and second straight victory when Adelphi visits the Princeton campus for the first time since the 2003 season Wednesday night.
Princeton has won six straight against the Panthers dating back to the 1997 season.
After a 2-0 victory against FDU here Sunday night and a scoreless tie here three days earlier against Monmouth, the Tigers (1-6-1) haven't allowed a goal in their last 238 minutes of action dating back to a goal by California in the 51st minute of that game Sept. 23.
At the same time, the Tigers have outshot their opponents 47-27 in the last three games, including an impressive 24-8 shot advantage in the first half of those three games.
Princeton freshman defender Josh Walburn was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week this past Monday. In addition to helping the Tiger defense to a pair of shutouts last week, he also scored his first career goal, the game winner, in the 63rd minute against FDU.
Sophomore Max Hare also scored his first goal of the season for Princeton against FDU, providing insurance for the Tigers with a header in the 85th minute. The goal was the third of Hare's career.
Adelphi (0-7-2) doesn't have a win this season but has taken three of its last four games into overtime, getting ties against St. Francis (N.Y.) and against a Towson team that was nationally ranked early in the season. The Panthers fell to Longwood University in overtime on Saturday, 2-1, in their Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) opener.
Carlo Acquista is in his first season as Adelphi's head coach. He took over for longtime coach Bob Montgomery, who concluded a 29-year career as head coach of the Panthers by taking Adelphi to the NCAA tournament in 2006.
Princeton and Adelphi last played two seasons ago on Long Island, with the Tigers winning in overtime 1-0 on a goal by Darren Spicer.
The Tigers begin Ivy League play Saturday night (7 p.m.) at Brown, which entered last night's game against Boston University undefeated (6-0-1) in its first seven games. After tonight's game, Princeton has just one non-league game remaining, an Oct. 17 visit to St. John's.
Princeton's remaining home games, Ivy League contests against Columbia (Oct. 13), Cornell (Oct. 27) and Yale (Nov. 11), will all be available via live video stream at the Tiger Zone at GoPrincetonTigers.com. Check the website for more details and to sign up for the Tiger Zone.
