Saiontz Advances To Round Of 16 At Wilson/ITA East Regional
October 22, 2007 | Women's Tennis
No. 7 seed Melissa Saiontz won two matches on Sunday, including a come-from-behind victory in her second match, to advance to the Round of 16 in the singles bracket of the Wilson/ITA East Regional at Old Dominion University.
Saiontz played Dartmouth's Molly Scott in the third round and lost the first set 6-1 to the No. 19 seed, but the Princeton sophomore recovered to win the next two sets by scores of 6-4. She plays Penn's Charlie Tansill, the No. 26 seed, in the Round of 16 Monday.
Earlier in the day Sunday, Saiontz had defeated Ivy League rival Sarah Lederhandler by scores of 6-2 and 6-4 in the second round.
Two Princeton freshmen, Rebecca Parks and Taylor Marable, each won first-round matches before being eliminated in the second round Sunday.
Parks had a solid win over Virginia's Maggie Yehner, 6-4 and 7-5, before falling in straight sets to the tournament's No. 3 seed, Marshall's Kellie Schmitt. Marable came from behind to defeat Albany's Kim Weltman and nearly knocked off the bracket's No. 14 seed in the second round, taking the second set in a tiebreak against Penn's Yulia Rivelis and then falling 7-5 in the decisive third set.
Parks also joined with senior Ivana King to win two doubles matches and advance to the Round of 16 in that bracket. King and Parks, the No. 16 seeds, defeated a team from Longwood in the first round and then a Cornell squad by an 8-6 score in the second round before falling to the fourth-seeded team from Virginia, 8-3, in the third round.
King also played in singles bracket, where she lost to Boston College's Lauren Cash in three sets in the first round.
