October 22, 2007 | Men's Tennis
Princeton junior Peter Capkovic will play Tuesday for a spot in the ITA National Indoor championships after winning his quarterfinal match Monday morning at the Wilson/ITA Northeast Regional at Jadwin Gym.
Capkovic, the tournament's No. 2 seed, won the first set 6-3 over surprise quarterfinalist Omar Laalej from Drexel and then won a second-set tiebreak 7-4 to advance to Tuesday's semifinals. The Princeton junior will play the No. 9 seed, Harvard's Dan Nguyen, in a semifinal match at 9 a.m.
The other semifinal will feature the top seed, Penn State's Michael James, taking the court against No. 12 seed Mark Brodie from Dartmouth.
The championship match will follow the semifinals Tuesday afternoon. Regardless of the outcome of the final match, both players will earn spots in next weekend ITA National Indoor championships in Columbus, Ohio.
In doubles action, Capkovic and teammate Alex Vuckovic reached the semifinals of the 64-team bracket with a Monday morning 8-4 win over Ivy League rivals Noah Gardner and Sam Garland of Brown, but the Princeton pair, seeded No. 6, lost a tough match to the Columbia team of Justin Chow and Bogden Borta in the semis.
Monday's doubles final will feature the Columbia tandem against the winner of another semifinal match between teams from Penn State and Brown, and the doubles championship team will also advance the national intercollegiate tournament next week.
