Men's Soccer Hosts Cornell Saturday Afternoon
October 25, 2007 | Men's Soccer
The Princeton men's soccer team hopes to extend its home unbeaten streak in 2007 to five games and its unbeaten streak at home against Cornell to 11 games when the Big Red visits Powers Field Saturday at 4 p.m. in the second half of a women's/men's doubleheader.
The Tigers haven't lost at home since the third game of the season, Sept. 14 against Colgate. Princeton hasn't lost to Cornell at home since the 1985 season, outscoring the Big Red 31-8 in 10 straight victories. Only one current Princeton player, senior forward Kyle McHugh, was born when the 1985 game was played.
Princeton (3-8-2, 1-2 Ivy) played a strong first half at 13th-ranked Harvard last Saturday, but the Crimson scored twice in a five-minute span late in the game to win 3-2. McHugh scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season for Princeton to tie the game, while freshman Brandon Busch made a nice individual play to put the Tigers ahead 2-1 at halftime.
Junior goalkeeper Joe Walter earned his first start since Sept. 17 and had nine saves, including several sprawling stops in the second half that kept the Tigers ahead.
Cornell (5-6-1, 0-2-1 Ivy) stepped out of conference Tuesday night and lost a heartbreaker at Penn State, with the Nittany Lions scoring with just 1:52 left in the second 10-minute overtime period. The Big Red tied the game in the 65th minute on the first goal of the season for defender Kevin Vieira.
Like Princeton, the Big Red has lost to nationally-ranked Harvard and Brown in Ivy League play. Cornell's tie came at Yale two weeks ago.
The Big Red defeated the Tigers 2-0 in Ithaca a year ago, getting goals late in the first half and on a penalty kick early in the second half.
The Tigers play at Penn next Saturday (5 p.m.) before hosting Yale the following Sunday (4 p.m.) on Senior Day. Princeton concludes the regular season Nov. 17 with a game at Dartmouth.
