McHugh's Second Goal Gives Men's Soccer 4-3 OT Win Over Adelphi
October 03, 2007 | Men's Soccer
Kyle McHugh scored his second goal of the game 6:40 into the first overtime period to give the Princeton men's soccer team a 4-3 victory over Adelphi in a non-conference match played at Powers Field Wednesday night.
Ben Burton gained possession on the left wing and sent the ball into the box, where it deflected off an Adelphi defender to McHugh. The Princeton senior then turned and scored the winning goal from five yards away past Adelphi goalie Vincent Treglia.
"Ben sent the ball in and I was fortunate to have it come right to me after it deflected," said McHugh. "We haven't gotten a lot of breaks this season, so it was nice to get one at that time and be able to end the game."
The Tigers (2-6-1), who extended their unbeaten streak to three games, led 3-1 at halftime, but Adelphi (0-8-2) scored twice in a 12-minute span midway through the second half to tie the game.
Patrick Figueiredo played give-and-go with Rob Phillipou to cut Princeton's lead to 3-2 in the 56th minute, and substitute Andrew Worth then tied the game with 21:48 left in regulation when he headed in Val Charalambous' corner kick.
Princeton started the game by converting on its early opportunities. With just less than 11 minutes off the clock, Devin Muntz gained possession just behind midfield and sent a pass over the top to Max Hare, who stayed onside and chipped a shot from inside the box over Treglia's head to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers then took a two-goal lead in the 29th minute, when Brad Fechter gained possession on the left side after an Adelphi giveaway and rocketed a shot from just outside the box into the right-hand corner of the net.
McHugh's first goal of the game, which gave the Tigers that 3-1 lead heading into halftime, came as a result of another nice play from Fechter. The Princeton junior sent a cross into the box from a similar spot on the left side, and McHugh redirected the pass with his head for the goal.
"We've had games this season where we've had more chances and possessed the ball more, but we haven't had games where we've converted on chances like we did tonight," said Princeton head coach Jim Barlow. "I thought we did a nice job of controlling play in overtime after Adelphi really got some momentum in the second half."
Princeton outshot the Panthers 15-11, including 7-2 in the first half. Adelphi had nine of the game's 11 corner kicks, however, including seven in the second half as the Panthers came from behind to tie the game.
The Tigers won their seventh straight against Adelphi dating back to the 1997 season.
Princeton plays its Ivy League opener Saturday night at Brown.
