Brown Comes Back To Stun Men's Soccer In OT, 2-1
October 06, 2007 | Men's Soccer
10th-ranked Brown came from behind on its home field with two goals in a nine-minute span, including the overtime game winner by Nick Elenz-Martin 5:11 into extra time, to defeat Princeton 2-1 in the Ivy League men's soccer opener for both teams at Stevenson Field Saturday night.
The result was eerily similar to last season, when the Tigers took an early lead at Lourie-Love Field only to have the Bears tie the game late in regulation and then win in overtime. This time, Elenz-Martin ended the game with a goal thanks to set-up passes by teammate Kevin Davies and an initial punt by goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand.
This time, the game was scoreless at halftime before Princeton (2-7-1, 0-1) broke ahead nine minutes into the second half. The goal came as a result of a heads-up play by senior Kyle McHugh, who took a throw-in immediately after Brown goalie Jarrett Leach had kicked the ball out of bounds. Teddy Schneider took the quick throw-in and knocked the ball into the empty goal past Leach, who was still running back toward his box to get in position.
Princeton would hold onto that lead until the 86th minute, when Brown's Chris Roland scored unassisted to tie the game at 1-1. The Tigers would then hold on to send the game to overtime despite a 12-3 advantage in shots for the Bears (7-1-1, 1-0) in the second half.
Schneider's goal for Princeton was his third of the season, tying him with McHugh for the team lead.
Princeton goalie Sean Lynch faced 19 Brown shots and nine corner kicks on the night and had four saves while playing the entire game for the Tigers.
Brown, which got six saves from goalies Leach and Grandstrand, defeated the Tigers for the third straight season.
The Tigers host Columbia next Saturday at Powers Field (4 p.m.) in the second game of a women's/men's soccer doubleheader against the Lions.
