Men's Soccer Visits Penn, Looks To Move Above .500 In Ivy Play
November 01, 2007 | Men's Soccer
Princeton looks to start a new winning streak against rival Penn and move above. 500 in Ivy League play when the Tigers visit Rhodes Field in Philadelphia for a 5 p.m. match against the Quakers Saturday.
The Tigers (4-8-2) and Penn (5-7-2) are each tied with Harvard at 2-2 in league play with three league games remaining, giving the Tigers a chance to move into third place alone with a win Saturday and a Harvard loss or tie.
Penn's 1-0 overtime win over the Tigers last season in the last game ever played at Lourie-Love Field ended one of the more amazing streaks in Ivy League history. The Tigers hadn't lost to Penn since the 1985 season before that result, going 18-0-2 against the Quakers in a 20-game stretch from 1986 through 2005.
Princeton extended its home winning streak to five games last Saturday with a 1-0 victory against Cornell. Freshman Brandon Busch took advantage of a failed Cornell clearing attempt to score the game winner 14 minutes into the second half. The Tigers also extended their home winning streak against the Big Red to 11 straight games.
The Quakers were another victim of top-10-ranked Brown last weekend, falling to the Ivy-unbeaten Bears 3-0 at Stevenson Field in Providence. Like Princeton, Penn started the season slowly but has recovered in the last month, going 4-3 in its last seven games after a 1-4-2 start to the year.
The Tigers have five players with at least two goals this season, led by senior captain Kyle McHugh's six goals, and have outshot their opponents through 14 games this season. Penn has a similar balanced scoring attack, with seven players notching at least two goals through 14 games.
Junior goalie Joe Walter earned his first victory of the season last Saturday against Cornell. Walter, who started the first four games this season, returned to the starting lineup at St. John's Oct. 17.
Saturday's game is the first in a men's-women's doubleheader between Princeton and Penn. The women's soccer teams battle for first place in the Ivy League beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Princeton returns home to face Yale Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. on Senior Day, the final home game for its eight-member senior class.
