Fencing to Begin Season This Weekend at Penn State Garret Open
November 16, 2007 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
PRINCETON -- The 2007-08 Princeton fencing season will get underway this weekend at Penn State when the Tigers compete at the Garret Open, an individual event.
The Garret Open will feature approximately 80 men's and 80 women's fencers in each weapon and divide them into pools of about a half-dozen to compete in round-robin events. The field will then be pared with those not making the cut dropping to a consolation bracket. The advancing fencers will again be divided into pools and then pared until there are 16 fencers left to be placed into a bracket.
Women's competition will take place Saturday with the men following on Sunday. Both days will start at 8:30 a.m.
"Many of the strongest collegiate fencers are at this meet," Princeton coach Zoltan Dudas said of the Garret. "It is the only time in our whole season that we do not compete in a team-based tournament, and it is a chance to try things since it doesn't count toward NCAA qualification. Usually, the people who do well here are in contention for All-America at the end of the year."
At last year's Garret Open, Alejandro Bras in the foil and Max Peck in the epee advanced to the finals bracket, while Jocelyn Svengsouk in the foil and Erin McGarry and Chandler Clay in the epee advanced on the women's side.
