Rensselaer Rallies Past Princeton in Men's Hockey
November 30, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Rensselaer scored three goals in the second period to come from behind and defeat the Princeton men's hockey team 4-3 on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Sophomore Cam MacIntrye had a goal and an assist in the loss for Princeton.
Princeton looked to be in good shape early as the Tigers scored two goals around the midway point of the opening period to go ahead 2-0. First at 7:56, junior Lee Jubinville scored on a breakaway as MacIntyre sprung him with a breakaway pass. Freshman Cam Ritchie assisted on the goal as he chipped the puck to MacIntyre to begin the play.
Princeton made it 2-0 less than two minutes later when senior Landis Stankievech scored his first goal of the season off a rebound in front of the Engineer goal. Senior Keith Shattenkirk and junior Brandan Kushniruk assisted on the goal. Princeton seemed to have control of play, but got a bad break at the 17:08 mark of the period when Jeff Foss' long dump-in attempt from his own blue line took an awkward bounce and landed in the Tiger goal.
Princeton extended its lead to 3-1 four minutes into the second period with a power-play goal. Junior Brett Wilson won an offensive zone faceoff straight ahead and quickly red the puck across to MacIntyre on the doorstep, where he redirected it by Rensselaer goaltender Mathias Lange for his seventh goal of the season.
Momentum turned from there and Rensselaer again made it a one-goal game when Erik Burgoerfer drove to the net from the point and scored. Rensselaer made it 3-3 two minutes later when Paul Kerins followed up his own rebound for his third goal of the season.
RPI then scored the game-winning goal on the power-play with just one second left in the period. Andrew Lord took a shot that caromed off the end boards to Jonathan Ornelas, who quickly shot the puck into the open net to give the Engineers their first lead of the game.
Princeton freshman goaltender Alan Reynolds made 21 saves in the loss, while Lange stopped 32 shots in the RPI net. Princeton outshot the Engineers 35-25.
The win moved RPI to 7-4-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the league while Princeton fell to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in league play. Princeton hosts Union tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
