December 01, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Juniors Brett Wilson and Lee Jubinville each recorded three points as the Princeton men's hockey team defeated Union 4-3 on Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton raced to an early lead with two goals in each of the first two periods.
Princeton, which looked to rebound on Saturday from surrendering a pair of two-goal leads on Friday night in a loss to Rensselaer, jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 7:03 of the first period when Wilson scored his first of two goals. Jubinville blocked a clearing attempt at the blue line and fed the puck to Wilson on the doorstep who quickly directed it into the open net for his third goal of the season.
The same line made it a 2-0 lead for the Tigers at 14:26 of the period when Jubinville scored his fifth goal of the season on the power play. Wilson worked the puck to sophomore Cam MacIntyre, who found Jubinville, who scored with a quick shot from the right circle.
Union cut the Tiger lead in half with a goal 2:36 into the second period as Josh Coyle picked a corner with a shot from the left circle as he skated off the boards, but Princeton regained the two-goal margin a minute later when Wilson scored his second of the night on a breakaway. Jubinville created a turnover in the neutral zone, then sprung Wilson on a breakaway with a perfect pass, and Wilson converted with a shot to the short side of Union goaltender Corey Milan.
Princeton made the lead 4-1 at 14:39 of the second period when sophomore Mark Magnowski scored his second goal of the season. Freshman Kevin Lohry started the play with a rinkwide pass to freshman Matt Arhontas, who gained the Union zone, the slowed up and hit Magnowski, who was trailing the play, with a pass at the top of the circles. Magnowski, who returned to the lineup on Saturday after missing four games with an injury, scored just inside the near post to put Princeton ahead by three goals.
The goal turned out to be the game winner as Union scored twice in the third period. Matt Cook made the score 4-2 52 seconds into the period and Mario Valery-Trabucco scored midway through the period, but Union could get no closer and Princeton won 4-3.
Princeton sophomore goaltender Zane Kalemba made 32 saves for the win, while Milan stopped 22 shots in the loss. Union outshot Princeton 35-26 in the game.
The win was Princeton's first this season on home ice as Princeton moved to 5-5 overall and 4-4 in league play. Union fell to 3-6-2 overall and 1-3-2 in the league. Princeton closes out the first part of the season next weekend with two games against Notre Dame.
