#6 Notre Dame Defeats Princeton 4-2
December 07, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- After falling behind early, sixth-ranked Notre Dame scored late in the first period and early in the second to take a lead in a 4-2 win over the Princeton men's hockey team on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink in front of a capacity crowd of 2,157. Senior Erik Pridham and freshman Taylor Fedun scored for Princeton in the loss.
Princeton started the game strong and went ahead 1-0 just past halfway when Pridham scored his first goal of the season. Sophomore Kevin Kaiser gained the puck in the Princeton end on the back check and started the breakout with a rink-wide pass to sophomore Jody Pederson. Ritchie then fed Pridham at the Notre Dame blue line and Pridham took a few strides before wristing a shot under Notre Dame goaltender Jordan Pearce. The goal was Pridham's first since scoring at Notre Dame in the 2005-06 season.
The Fighting Irish answered three minutes later when Garrett Regan scored on a rebound as Notre Dame began to gain the momentum. Notre Dame outshot Princeton in the first period, then pressured the Tigers throughout the second, outshooting the Tigers 13-4. Princeton sophomore goaltender Zane Kalemba held Notre Dame at bay for most of the period but Justin White found a seam with 1:31 left in the period to give Notre Dame its first lead.
The Fighting Irish made it a 3-1 lead with a shorthanded goal at 4:32 of the third period. Erik Condra and Kyle Lawson passed back-and-forth on a 2 on 1 before Condra scored the goal.
Princeton moved back within a goal at the 12:36 mark of the period as the gain tightened over the final 10 minutes. Freshman Kevin Lohry worked the puck low in the Irish end, before junior Lee Jubinville took over. Jubinville then found Fedun cutting to the net and Fedun placed his shot just under the cross bar to make the score 3-2.
Princeton continued to pressure, but after killing a late penalty, had a bounce go against them, which left Ben Ryan alone with the puck in front and he scored to seal the win for Notre Dame.
Pearce made 17 saves for the win while Kalemba made 28 in the loss. Notre Dame moved to 15-4 with the win while Princeton is now 5-6. The teams complete their series tomorrow at 7 p.m.
