Men's Water Polo Season Ends With Loss to Bucknell
November 04, 2007 | Men's Water Polo
The Princeton men's water polo fell to Bucknell 5-4 in the fourth-place game at the Southern Championships on Sunday, a loss that concludes the team's season. Senior Zach Beckmann, junior Alex Edmunds and sophomore Gregor Horstmeyer each scored two goals, and senior Scott Syverson made 13 saves in the Tiger goal.
Bucknell opened the game strong and led 4-2 after a quarter and managed to stay a step ahead of the Tigers the rest of the day. Princeton cut the lead one by halftime, but the lead stretched back out to two after three quarters. Bucknell led 9-7 in the game's final minute, but a Beckmann goal with 45 seconds remaining cut the gap and an ejection with 16 seconds left gave Princeton a 6 on 5 for the final seconds. Princeton could not convert though and time ran out with Bucknell clinging to the one-goal lead. Horstmeyer, Beckmann and Edmunds each had three goals, while sophomore Matt Hudnall and freshman Jeff Cole scored single goals.
"I'm really proud about how the guys played today," said Princeton head coach Luis Nicolao. "We got behind early, but never gave up, and battled Bucknell to the end."
