Spicer, Whitecaps To Face Beckham, Galaxy In Friendly Wednesday In Vancouver
November 06, 2007 | Men's Soccer
Former Princeton soccer star Darren Spicer '06 will take the field for the Vancouver Whitecaps Wednesday when the Whitecaps face David Beckham and the LA Galaxy in an international friendly at Vancouver's B.C. Place.
The Whitecaps, who play in the USL First Division, added Spicer to their roster as a free agent last month. He spent the 2007 season playing for another team in that league, the Minnesota Thunder, where he scored two goals and added three assists in 17 games played.
Wednesday's international friendly between the Whitecaps and the Galaxy was originally scheduled for early October but was postponed due to Beckham's knee injury that forced the international star to miss much of his first season in MLS.
Vancouver was the 2006 USL-1 league champions but fell in the first round of the league playoffs in 2007.
Spicer was the 2004 Ivy League Player of the Year for Princeton after scoring a league-high 12 goals. A native of Diamond Bar, Calif., he was a first-team All-Ivy selection in both 2004 and 2005 and finished his career with 27 goals. He ranks 12th all-time at Princeton with 58 career points.
Wednesday's game, which begins at 7 p.m. PT (10 p.m. ET), will be televised by GOLTV Canada.
