Tigers Win Two 5,000s at New Balance Collegiate Invitational
February 03, 2007 | Women's Track and Field
The Princeton women's track team won both 5,000-meter races contested Friday on the first day of the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the 168th Street Armory in New York City.
Sophomore standout Jolee VanLeuven dominated the championship race, featuring 16 top distance runners from around the country. VanLeuven finished the 5,000 meters in 16:42.98, almost 10 seconds better than the second-place time of Denise Bargiachi of Arkansas. Runners from Duke, Oklahoma and North Carolina were in the race as was Princeton teammate Mia Swenson, who finished ninth in 17:16.75.
Princeton also won the 5,000-meter "college" race when Caitlin McTague crossed the finish line in a time of 17:24.15, five seconds ahead of the second-place time, to impressively defeat a field of 22 other runners. Teammate Rachel Farnsworth was seventh in that race.
The Tigers were also impressive in one of their specialties, the distance medley relay, finishing third behind North Carolina and Columbia in that championship race. The team of Christy Johnson, Agatha Offorjebe, Catha Mullen and Liz Costello finished that race in a time of 11:27.27.
Several Tiger athletes will be in action on Saturday as the New Balance Collegiate Invitational concludes.
