Dartmouth Defeats Princeton 3-2 to Claim Quarterfinal Series
March 10, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
HANOVER, N.H. -- Dartmouth scored two goals in a 1:26 span of the third period to take a 3-1 lead and then held on to defeat the Princeton men's hockey team 3-2 in Game 2 of the best-of-three ECACHL Quarterfinal Series on Saturday night at Thompson Arena. The win gave Dartmouth the series two games to none.
Dartmouth jumped to a 1-0 lead 6:38 into the first period when David Jones scored on a one-timer from the slot. Nick Johnson controlled the puck behind the Tiger net and fed Jones in front. Princeton senior netminder B.J. Sklapsky got most of the quick shot, but the puck squeezed through him and just trickled over the goal line to give Dartmouth the 1-0 lead. Princeton had a chance to take the lead prior to the goal, but sophomore Brett Wilson put a shot off the outside of the post in the game's first few minutes.
Princeton evened things up with the lone goal of the second period when sophomore Lee Jubinville collected his 11th tally of the season. Senior Brett Westgarth gloved a Dartmouth clearing attempt down at the blue line, the fed his brother Kevin who worked the puck to Jubinville. He took a shot that Dartmouth goaltender Mike Devine saved, but the rebound laid in front for the Jubinville, who backhanded it under Devine's arm for a Princeton power-play goal.
The game remained tied at one for the first half of the third period before Jones made it 2-1 for Dartmouth on a shorthanded breakaway goal at 11:49. Dartmouth quickly made it 3-1 when J.T. Wyman scored on a one-timed blast at 13:15.
Princeton quickly answered 34 seconds later when freshman Mark Magnowski slid a rebound by Devine for his 10th of the season. Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller and freshman Cam MacIntyre assisted on the Tiger goal.
Princeton pressured late as the Tigers pulled Sklapsky in favor of the extra attacker late in the period, but Devine made a few big stops late, none bigger then when he blocked Goeckner-Zoeller's shot in the final seconds.
Sklapsky finished the night with 29 saves while Devine made 27 for Dartmouth. Princeton finishes the season 15-16-3 overall, while Dartmouth climbs to 18-10-3.
