No. 4 Duke Holds Off Ninth-Ranked Princeton in Women's Lacrosse, 16-14
March 11, 2007 | Women's Lacrosse
Kristen Waagbo and Leigh Jester each scored goals in a 26-second span late in the second half as No. 4 Duke held off the last of several Princeton comeback attempts in the final minutes on the way to a 16-14 victory over the No. 9 Tigers in a women's lacrosse game played at Koskinen Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Princeton (2-1) trailed 7-2 midway through the first half but came nearly all the way back when Katie Lewis-Lamonica scored to make it 12-11 with 10 minutes left in the game. But the Blue Devils (5-1) then took control for a final time, getting Waagbo's goal off a Princeton turnover one minute later and Jester's score after a takeaway by Waagbo 26 seconds after that. Duke then took a 15-11 lead on a goal by Rachel Sanford less than a minute after Jester's goal.
The Tigers would get back within three with 4:16 left when Kathleen Miller scored the third of her team-high four goals, but Duke's Sanford scored 46 seconds after Miller's goal to put the Blue Devils back ahead by four.
Miller and Kristin Schwab would each score for Princeton in the final 1:05, but Schwab's goal came with just four seconds left on the clock.
The teams traded goals in the first eight minutes before Duke scored five straight to take a lead it would never relinquish. The Blue Devils exploded for those five goals in a span of less than three minutes and took that 7-2 lead on a free-position goal by Carolyn Davis with 14:56 left in the half.
Princeton would then show its own offensive explosiveness, getting goals from Christine Casaceli and Holly McGarvie in a 16-second span to stem Duke's run. When Casaceli and Miller scored goals in a 44-second span later in the half, the Tigers were back within 9-6, and Princeton would cut its halftime deficit to 10-8 after Miller scored an unassisted goal with nine seconds left in the half.
Lewis-Lamonica had three goals and two assists for the Tigers, while Casaceli also scored three times and Alison Murray twice. McGarvie had a goal and two assists for Princeton, which outshot Duke 38-37.
Sanford and Jester each scored four times for Duke, which defeated Princeton for the second straight season. Waagbo added three assists for the Blue Devils, who never trailed in the game.
Goalie Colleen O'Boyle had 10 saves for Princeton, while Duke's Kim Imbesi had 12 saves.
The teams combined to score seven free-position goals on 15 eight-meter attempts. Duke was successful on four of its six eight-meter attempts.
The Tigers host Penn State at Class of 1952 Stadium Saturday afternoon.
