Seven Tigers Earn Bids to NCAA Fencing Championships
March 14, 2007 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Seven Princeton fencers have been selected to compete in the 144-person NCAA Championships in Madison, N.J., later this month.
Each of the six weapons, men's and women's epee, foil and sabre, will have 24 competitors. Through success at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional on March 10, Princeton placed fencers in five of the six weapons, the NCAA confirmed with its selection announcement Wednesday.
Last year, Princeton earned six NCAA bids as the Tigers finished eighth in the combined men's/women's point standings.
In the foil, Princeton qualified senior Sara Jew-Lim and freshman Jocelyn Svengsouk. Due to the limit of two fencers per school in any particular weapon, freshman Karen Petsche will serve as an alternate. The Princeton trio finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, at the regional meet.
Jew-Lim will be making her third NCAA finals bid, finishing 17th in 2004 and 23rd last year.
In the epee, senior Erin McGarry, a two-time All-America who finished second at the regional meet, will be making her fourth NCAA finals appearance. She has improved her finish on the national stage each year, going from 14th to sixth to fifth. Sophomore Jasjit Bhinder, who finished eighth at the regional, will be making her first NCAA finals appearance.
Three Princeton men qualified for the national meet, one in each weapon.
Senior foilist Alejandro Bras will be making his third NCAA appearance after a 21st-place finish in 2004 and 18th place in 2005. He finished 10th at this year's regional.
Junior epee Tommi Hurme earned his second NCAA bid with a fourth-place finish at the regional. He placed 15th in his first national final bid last year.
Thomas Abend, a freshman sabre, parlayed his eighth-place finish at the regional meet into an NCAA bid in his first season.
The competition will feature all 24 fencers in each weapon competing in a complete round-robin. The four fencers with the highest win-loss totals after the round-robin will then compete in a two-round bracket to determine the individual champion, runner-up and third-place finisher.
All three men's weapons will begin competition Thursday, March 22 and end the following day, while the women will begin competition Saturday, March 24 and end the next day.
