Kevin Westgarth Signs With Los Angeles Kings
March 16, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
Princeton senior forward Kevin Westgarth recently agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Kings and will begin his professional career this weekend with the team's American Hockey League affiliate in Manchester, N.H. Westgarth completed his Princeton career with 60 points in 116 games.
Westgarth signed a two-way contract and will report to Manchester, the Kings' top minor league affiliate. Westgarth completed his senior season at Princeton last weekend and tallied a career-high 24 points in 33 games this year. He was named the league's Player of the Week and the INCH National Player of the Week following a seven-point performance during the final weekend of the regular season. He has had 20-plus points in each of the last two seasons.
“Growing up watching Hockey Night in Canada, this is obviously a dream come true, and something I have been working towards for my entire life,” says Westgarth. “I look forward to making the most of this opportunity for myself, my parents, and for the Princeton Hockey program. This will help to further demonstrate that coming to Princeton does not preclude you from success in athletics, but that it is a part of an environment that prizes excellence in all facets of life. All of this still seems rather surreal, and I'm not sure I'll believe it until I step on the ice again.”
“I am especially proud of Kevin in the fact that he worked extremely hard not just on physical strength and conditioning, but on his game; everything from checking technique and puck protection, to defining his role and shift management,” says Princeton head coach Guy Gadowsky. “I know he did a lot of mental work as well as on and off-ice physical training. He has made a great contribution to our program on and off the ice the past four years. We wish him the best in his professional career with the Los Angeles Kings and look forward to seeing his successes.”
