Tigers Fall to No. 23 Duke 7-0, in Spring Trip Opener in San Diego
March 18, 2007 | Women's Tennis
The 60th-ranked Princeton women's tennis team began a series of Spring Break matches in California with a 7-0 loss to 23rd-ranked Duke Saturday in San Diego.
Duke lost a total of four games in sweeping the doubles matches. The Blue Devils clinched the match when Jessi Robinson defeated Princeton's Joanna Roth 6-0 and 6-4 at the No. 6 singles spot.
The Tigers did take the top two singles matches to a third set. Melissa Saiontz won the first set against Daniela Bercek at No. 1, but Bercek came back to win the second set and then take a tiebreak for the match. At No. 2, Ivana King won the first set against No. 108 Melissa Mang but Mang came back in similar fashion to win a tiebreak.
Princeton head coach Kathy Sell was a standout player for Duke before graduating in 2001.
Princeton (6-3), which saw a six-match winning streak come to an end, will play San Diego on Sunday morning. The Tigers will then play at No. 26 Pepperdine on Wednesday and at No. 48 Long Beach State Thursday.
