Tigers Drop 6-1 Decision to No. 69 San Diego State
March 22, 2007 | Men's Tennis
Led by a pair of nationally-ranked singles players and strong play at the bottom of the lineup, San Diego State defeated Princeton 6-1 in a men's tennis match played Wednesday afternoon at the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club.
No. 69 Princeton (7-3) won a hotly contested doubles point, but the 64th-ranked Aztecs (7-6) won all six singles matches.
The Tigers won all three doubles matches, two in tiebreaks. The biggest win came at No. 1, where Princeton's Ted Mabrey and George Carpeni defeated the 17th-ranked team in the nation, Christian Groh and Markus Dickhardt. Princeton's nationally-ranked doubles team, 60th-ranked Peter Capkovic and Alex Vuckovic, won in a similar tiebreak at No. 2.
The Aztecs would clinch the match by winning four of the six singles matches in straight sets.
Both Capkovic, at No. 1, and Carpeni, at No. 3, extended their singles matches to a third set. Capkovic split sets with 52nd-ranked Dickhardt before falling in a proset, while Carpeni lost a third-set proset to Anthony Gomez.
The Tigers will play at San Diego Saturday to conclude their Spring Break series of matches in California.
