Princeton Softball to End Spring Trip with Five-Game Stetson Tourney
March 23, 2007 | Softball
SANFORD, Fla. -- The Princeton softball team will face Kent State, Lipscomb and Stetson in a total of five games in DeLand, Fla., from Friday through Sunday before returning north.
Princeton will play a doubleheader for the fourth straight day Friday when it faces Kent State at 9 a.m. and Lipscomb at 2 p.m. When that streak extends to five days Saturday, the Tigers will take on Lipscomb at 11:30 a.m. and host Stetson at 4:30 p.m. Sunday will feature only one game, a 9 a.m. start against Kent State.
Princeton is 4-7 so far on the spring trip after going 2-3 at the University of South Florida's tournament last weekend, splitting midweek doubleheaders with South Florida and Stetson and dropping a pair to Florida Thursday.
On the season, the Tigers are 9-11 and will take on Rutgers Wednesday in Piscataway before beginning the Ivy League season next weekend.
The series: The history with the three teams Princeton will face at Stetson is short. The Tigers faced Kent State only once, winning a 1-0 game at Winthrop University's spring tournament in 1996. Princeton had never faced Stetson until Tuesday, when the Tigers split a doubleheader. The Tigers have never faced Lipscomb.
On Kent State: The Golden Flashes of the Mid-American Conference (9-9) was also at the South Florida tournament last weekend, going 2-2, and has the week away from competition until the Stetson tournament commences Friday. Last season, Kent State qualified for the NCAA tournament and played in a regional hosted by Michigan.
The Flashes have two starters with a batting average over .300, led by junior Jamie Fitzpatrick's .353. She has 13 of the team's 49 RBIs and five of the nine home runs. Though Kent State is batting just .216 as a team, the Golden Flashes are holding it down in the circle with an ERA of just 1.75. Rookie righthander Kylie Reynolds (3-4, 1.19 ERA) and senior righty Brittney Robinson (4-5, 2.77) are the team's most-used pitchers.
On Lipscomb: The Lady Bisons of the Atlantic Sun conference are 12-14 and snapped an eight-game losing streak by winning three of four to start the conference schedule against Belmont and Stetson.
Lipscomb is hitting .324 as a team with seven players over .300. Rookie Lauren Dortwegt is hitting .393 and junior Heather Collins is at .385 with seven of the team's 23 home runs and a team-high 35 RBIs. In the circle, Lipscomb carries a 5.20 ERA. Rookie Christen Campbell has thrown 91.2 of the team's 166 innings, earning a 7-6 record and 3.63 ERA.
On Stetson: Princeton won Tuesday's opener against Stetson, 2-0, before the Hatters came back to win the nightcap, 4-1. Stetson is 22-9 and has played 26 of those games at home.
The Hatters are hitting .285 as a team and have senior Sherrel Fountain atop the batting stats at .406. The top power hitter is sophomore Andrea Migliori with 24 RBIs and nine of the team's 13 home runs. In the circle, the staff carries an impressive 1.55 ERA with each of its three top pitchers below 2.00. Princeton faced all three in the twinbill Tuesday. Sophomore Erica Demers leads the bunch in innings (78.1), record (8-3) and ERA (1.25).
