Lipscomb Turns Back Princeton Softball, 4-0
March 24, 2007 | Softball
DeLAND, Fla. -- There would be no turnabout for Princeton after yesterday's Lipscomb comeback. The Bison scored two runs each in the second and sixth innings to secure a 4-0 win over the Tiger softball team Saturday afternoon at Stetson University.
The loss extended Princeton's skid to five games and dropped the Tigers to 9-14 on the year. Lipscomb, winners of three of four at the Stetson Invitational, improved to 15-15.
Friday afternoon, Princeton led 3-0 heading into the Lipscomb half of the sixth, but the Bison scored four runs in that inning on the way to a 4-3 win.
Lipscomb roughed up Princeton starter Calli Jo Varner (3-3) for 10 hits, a walk and four hit batters as the Tiger senior earned three of the four runs. Varner stranded 11 Lipscomb runners.
Princeton, meanwhile, had six hits but never moved a runner as far as third base. Collette Abbott led the Tigers with a pair of base knocks. Stetson starter Kim Jacobson (5-7) struck out six and walked one.
Lipscomb's Abby Keese led off the second inning with a solo shot to leftfield, her fourth of the weekend and eighth on the season. A walk, an error and a hit batter loaded the bases, and Kristie Sirus followed with a run-scoring single before Varner got out of the inning with the bases loaded.
In the sixth, Kellie Sirus blasted her ninth home run of the season and brought home Leigh Little, who doubled, to push the lead to 4-0.
The Tigers will look to snap the skid at 4:30 p.m. Saturday against host Stetson, against which the Tigers split a doubleheader Tuesday.
