Princeton's Four Women's Fencers Halfway Through NCAA Championships
March 24, 2007 | Women's Fencing
MADISON, N.J. -- Princeton's four women's entrants at the NCAA fencing championships have finished their first of two days of competition.
Before competition ends Sunday, each fencer will have five-touch bouts against the 23 other fencers in the weapon. The four fencers with the most wins will advance to a bracket to determine the individual champion with 15-touch bouts.
In the epee, senior Erin McGarry is in 11th place of the 24 competitors, while sophomore Jasjit Bhinder is 19th. McGarry won seven of her 14 bouts Saturday, while Bhinder won five. The cutoff for fourth place is presently at 10, with nine bouts to go for every fencer Sunday.
In the foil, freshman Jocelyn Svengsouk is 12th, winning 6 of 14 bouts, while Sara Jew-Lim is 15th, also with six wins. Ties in win totals are broken by margin of victory, the number of touches on an opponent across all bouts minus the number recieved.
The team standing is determined by both men's and women's results combined. Princeton's three male competitors wrapped up competition Friday with the Tigers in 11th of 28 teams, and the first day of women's competition bumped Princeton to 10th. Princeton has 48 total bout victories, while Penn State leads all teams with 150 wins.
