March 24, 2007 | Women's Lacrosse
Kate Breslin scored three goals and Kendall McBrearty made nine saves to lead third-ranked Virginia to a 9-7 win over No. 10 Princeton in a women's lacrosse game played at Klockner Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (3-3) took a 2-1 lead early in the game before Virginia (8-1) scored three straight goals to take a lead it would not relinquish. Princeton pulled within one goal three times in the second half, the final time with 6:35 left when Ashley Amo scored to make it 8-7, but UVa's Jess Wasilewski scored an unassisted goal three minutes later to give her team some insurance.
Princeton took the lead 1:03 into the game on a Katie Lewis-Lamonica goal and led again 2-1 when Mary Minshall scored 12 minutes into the half, but Megan Havrilla's goal 11 seconds after that to start UVa's three-goal run. The Cavaliers led 5-3 at halftime and took their biggest lead of the game, 6-3, when Breslin scored just more than two minutes into the second half.
Lewis-Lamonica had two goals to lead the Tigers, who outshot the Cavaliers 25-22. Virginia won 13 of the game's 18 draw controls, but the Tiger defense contributed to 18 Cavalier turnovers that helped keep Princeton close.
Freshman Kaitlyn Perrelle played all 60 minutes in goal for Princeton, making seven saves.
Alison Murray, Holly McGarvie and Kristin Schwab each added a goal for the Tigers, whose three losses this season have come by a combined total of five goals. Virginia defeated Princeton in the regular season for the third straight year.
Ashley McCulloch added three assists for Virginia, while Havrilla had two assists in addition to her goal. The Cavaliers had assists on eight of their nine goals in the game.
Princeton will play at Cornell next Saturday in its Ivy League opener.
