Princeton Women's Golf to Open Spring at Pinehurst, N.C.
March 04, 2007 | Women's Golf
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Princeton women's golf team will open its spring season at famed Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C., with a 36-hole tournament Monday and Tuesday.
The team had a successful fall tournament, finishing first twice and second once in their three tournaments. All three times, the Tigers finished just ahead of Harvard, providing a good forecast for the spring-ending Ivy League championship April 21-22. The Pinehurst tournament, hosted by the College of Charleston, is the first of five spring tournaments before the Ivy meet.
Princeton's Annika Welander also won both fall tournaments in which Princeton finished first. Marlowe Boukis finished second, just as the Tigers were runners-up in the team's final fall tournament.
The Pinehurst tournament will feature 17 teams including Arkansas-Little Rock, Campbell, Charleston Southern, the host College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, James Madison, Marshall, Maryland, Memphis, North Carolina State, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Oregon, Penn State and Richmond in addition to the Tigers. The schools will play 18 holes each day with Monday starting at 11:30 a.m. and Tuesday starting at 9 a.m. The course is a Par 72 and measures 5,978 yards.
Pinehurst, a recognizeable name in the golf world, is home to eight courses, all identified by number. This tournament will be played on the No. 8 course, while the famous No. 2 course has hosted two U.S. Opens on the men's side in recent years, coming in 1999 and 2005.
