March 04, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- The Princeton men's hockey scored two goals in the third period to come from behind and defeat Brown 4-3 on Sunday night in Hobey Baker Rink. The win also clinched the ECACHL First Round playoff series for Princeton, which after losing the opener on Friday, won on Saturday and Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals against Dartmouth next weekend.
The series win is Princeton's first since the 1999 season when the Tigers bested Cornell at Baker Rink with a win and a tie when three points were needed to win a series. The is Princeton's third series win against Brown, and all three series have been decided two games to one. Tonight's game ended in regulation, which snapped a six-game streak between the teams of overtime games.
The game went back and forth with Princeton leading after one and trailing after two. Princeton's win was its first this season when trailing after two periods. Princeton was previously 0-9-1 in those games.
Princeton entered the third period trailing by a goal but started the period with a man advantage thanks to Brown penalty at the end of the second period. Brown took a second penalty for having too many skaters on the ice and Princeton took advantage of the two-man advantage when senior Kevin Westgarth scored his eighth goal of the season on a powerful one-time blast from the top of the slot. Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller fed him the pass from the corner and sophomore Brett Wilson also assisted on the score, which came at 1:31 of the third.
Princeton went ahead with the game-winning goal at 7:22 of the period on the rush when Goeckner-Zoeller scored his eighth of the season after freshman Mark Magnowski fed him with a perfect pass on the far side. Senior Daryl Marcoux, who opened the scoring for Princeton in the first period, started the plat with a pass to Magnowski in the neutral zone.
Princeton then had to fight of four penalties late as Brown pressured, but senior B.J. Sklapsky and the Tigers penalty kill held Brown at bay. With the goaltender pulled, Brown pressured in the game's final minutes, but freshman Kevin Kaiser won three big face-offs in the Princeton end as the Tigers held on for the win.
Marcoux opened the scoring with his third goal of the season and his second goal of the series when his shot from the circle eluded Brown's Dan Rosen. Freshman Dan Bartlett and junior Keith Shattenkirk assisted on the goal. Shattenkirk's assist was his first of the season and gave every Tiger skater a point this season.
Brown outscored Princeton in the middle period 3-1 and took a 3-2 lead to the intermission. Aaron Volpatti's one-time evened the score at 6:06, but Princeton answered back 23 seconds later to regain a lead at 2-1. Sophomore Lee Jubinville scored the goal, his 10th of the season, from Wilson and senior Darroll Powe.
Brown evened things back up at 9L46 on Volpatti's second goal of the night on a redirect in front, then took the lead when Matt Vokes scored on the power play at 14:39, setting the tone for Princeton's third-period comeback.
Sklapsky made 32 saves for his seventh win of the season and second in a row, while Rosen made 27 for Brown in the loss.
