Tigers Drop Quarterfinal Series Opener 6-2 at Dartmouth
March 09, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
HANOVER, N.H. -- Dartmouth scored four times in a 10-minute span of the second period to jump to a big lead and a 6-2 win over the Princeton men's hockey team on Friday night at Thompson Arena. With the win, Dartmouth takes a 1-0 series lead over Princeton in the best-of-three ECACHL Quarterfinal series.
The teams played a relatively conservative opening period with shots at a premium over the first half of the stanza as both defenses kept scoring chances to the perimeter. Dartmouth had the first real good scoring chance of the period and converted on it at 11:54 when J.T. Wyman scored on the power play.
The goal came after Princeton freshman Zane Kalemba stopped Wyman's initial point shot, but as play collapsed around the net for the rebound, it came back out to Wyman, who took a shot from the high slot that banked into the net off the cross bar to give Dartmouth the lead. Connor Shields and Kevin Swallow assisted on the goal.
Dartmouth came out for the second period flying and scored four goals in the first 10:31 of the period to take a 5-0 lead. T.J. Galiardi started things with a goal 35 seconds into the period when he was left alone in front of the goal, and Wyman continued things at 4:27 when his backhander skipped over Kalemba. David Jones made it 4-0 at 7:29 and Ben Lovejoy scored the fifth goal on a point shot through traffic on the power play.
Princeton got on the board at 14:57 when the Tigers' took advantage of a delayed penalty coming to Dartmouth and freshman Jody Pederson capped a rush with his first goal of the season coming on a quick shot over the right pad of Dartmouth netminder Mike Devine. Junior Keith Shattnekirk and freshman Kevin Kaiser set up the goal.
The Tigers added a power-play goal at 18:57 to make the score 5-2. Senior defensemen Brett Westgarth and Daryl Marcoux worked the puck back-and-forth at the points before Marocux took a shot that senior Darroll Powe redirected for his 13th goal of the year. The goal came on the power play and marked Princeton's 11th-straight game with a power-play goal.
Princeton had several good chances to get within two goals in the third period but Devine and Dartmouth penalty kill stood tall as the lone goal of the period was a shorthanded empty-netter for Dartmouth. Princeton outshot Dartmouth 11-5 in the final period, but Devine stopped all 11 attempts and secured the win for Dartmouth.
Devine finished the game with 24 saves, while the two Tiger goaltenders combined to make 22 saves. Kalemba made 13, as did sophomore Thomas Sychterz.
