Tigers Explode For 19-10 Win over Rutgers in Women's Lacrosse
March 07, 2007 | Women's Lacrosse
Princeton hadn't played Rutgers in women's lacrosse since 2001 entering its Wednesday night game against the Scarlet Knights. The Tigers wasted no time in reintroducing themselves on the way to a big win.
Katie Lewis-Lamonica scored four consecutive goals in a 1:58 span to help Princeton a 6-0 lead after six minutes and Kathleen Miller added five goals, leaving her one short of the century mark for her career, as the Tigers defeated the Scarlet Knights 19-10 on a frigid night at the RU Turf Field.
Miller's goal 3:17 into the game started an incredible run for the No. 9 Tigers (2-0), who would go on to lead 11-2 at halftime. Lewis-Lamonica would score right off the next draw control to make it 2-0, and she scored again after a Rutgers turnover a few seconds later.
Rutgers (3-1) would call a timeout, but it wouldn't stop the Princeton run and Lewis-Lamonica, who had a career-best six goals. She scored again just over a minute later to make it 4-0 and then again right off the draw control 16 seconds after that. The six-goal, six-minute run would end 28 seconds later when Katie Cox took a pass from Holly McGarvie and scored her second goal of the year.
Miller would then score twice in a 1:37 span after Rutgers finally got on the board, and Christine Casaceli's goal just three seconds before halftime would give the Tigers an insurmountable nine-goal lead at the break.
Princeton scored goals on 19 of its 30 shots. Five of Rutgers' nine goals came on free-position opportunities.
The Tigers forced the running clock that comes with a 10-goal lead when Cox scored just 20 seconds into the second half and led by as much as a 12-goal margin, 16-4, when Lewis-Lamonica scored her sixth and final goal on a free-position shot with 13 minutes left.
Cox, Casaceli and freshman Kristin Morrison each had two goals for Princeton, while Ashley Amo and McGarvie both had two assists.
Katie Batiuk scored four goals for Rutgers, all of which came in the second half. The Knights scored six of the final nine goals of the game after falling behind 16-4.
Colleen O'Boyle played the first half in goal for Princeton, while Kaitlyn Perrelle played the final 30 minutes. Princeton's goalies combined for seven saves, while Princeton chased Rutgers goalie Sandra Abel from the game after 22 minutes after taking a 9-1 lead.
Princeton plays at No. 4 Duke on Sunday afternoon. Game time is 1 p.m. in Durham, N.C.
