Women's Lacrosse Gets Big Win At Dartmouth, 13-9
April 21, 2007 | Women's Lacrosse
This time, it was Princeton that got off to the hot start. This time, it was Princeton that held off a comeback opponent with a pair of late goals. And this time, it was Princeton that got an important win on the home field of one of its biggest Ivy rivals.
Kathleen Miller and Katie Lewis-Lamonica combined for six first-half goals to lead the Tigers to a 9-4 halftime advantage, and the No. 15 Tigers went on to lead by as many as six goals in the second half of a 13-9 victory at No. 17 Dartmouth at Scully-Fahey Field Saturday afternoon.
The win improved Princeton (7-5) to 3-2 in the Ivy League with home games against Columbia and Brown next weekend. The Tigers, who ended a three-game losing streak to the Big Green (8-5, 4-3 Ivy), never trailed in the game and never led by fewer than two goals in the final 51 minutes of the game.
Princeton took control of Saturday's game with two first-half three-goal scoring runs. The first came in a four-minute span early in the half that gave the Tigers a 5-1 lead, and the second came toward the end of half that staved off a Dartmouth run and made it 8-3 Princeton.
Miller scored on a free-position shot to start the first three-goal Princeton run for her second goal of the game, and Lewis-Lamonica and Holly McGarvie would add scores in that run. In the second three-goal first-half spurt, Kristin Schwab scored an unassisted goal with 10 minutes left and was followed by consecutive scores from Lewis-Lamonica, who took a pass from Miller and scored with 3:52 left in the half to make the score 8-3.
Dartmouth got within 11-7 when Kristen Barry scored with 13 minutes left in the game, but the Tigers then got Schwab's third goal four minutes later and another goal by Ashley Amo with four minutes left to take an insurmountable 13-7 lead.
Miller scored four goals for the Tigers and added an assist, moving her into second place all-time at Princeton with 63 career assists and into the top 10 all-time at Princeton with 124 career goals. In addition to Schwab and Lewis-Lamonica's three-goal performances, Amo added two goals for the Tigers.
Princeton outshot Dartmouth 30-18, including 15-8 in the decisive first half, and scored on three of its four free-position shots.
Katherine Chiusano led the Big Green with three goals and an assist, while Sarah Szefi had two goals and an assist. Dartmouth had 26 turnovers compared to 19 for the Tigers.
Tiger goalie Kaitlyn Perrelle played all 60 minutes and had seven saves.
Princeton was playing at Scully-Fahey Field for the first time since last season's 7-6 overtime NCAA quarterfinal loss to Dartmouth. The Tigers also won at Dartmouth in 2003 on the way to their second straight NCAA championship.
Friday's Princeton game against Columbia at Class of 1952 Stadium begins at 3 p.m. The Tigers host Brown Saturday at 3 after the Princeton men host Dartmouth at noon.
