Tigers Win Big Over Columbia, 19-8, Improve to 4-2 in Ivy League Play

Holly McGarvie scored a season-high four goals and five other Princeton players had at least two scores as the No. 14 Tigers defeated Columbia, 19-8, in an Ivy League women's lacrosse game played on a gray Friday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Princeton (8-5, 4-2 Ivy) took a 5-0 lead and then scored four times in the last five minutes of the first half to put the game away after Columbia (5-10, 0-7 Ivy) had cut its deficit to 7-4. McGarvie had the final two goals in that stretch, including one on a nice feed from behind the net by Ashley Amo with seven seconds left in the half to make it 11-4 Tigers.
The Tigers took a 10-goal lead that forced a running clock midway through the second half when Alex Gangler's third goal of the game made it 16-6 Princeton.
Gangler had three goals and two assists for Princeton. She had not scored a point in three appearances this season prior to Friday. Christine Casaceli scored three goals herself off the bench and also had an assist, while Amo, Kathleen Miller and Kristin Schwab all had two goals for Princeton.
Princeton improved to 10-0 all-time against the Lions and has outscored Columbia 166-33 in those 10 victories. The Tigers improved to 76-3 since 1994 against the six other Ivy League schools other thatn Dartmouth.
Katie Warner and Brittany Shannon each had two goals for Columbia, which forced a Princeton timeout with five minutes left in the first half after fashioning a three-goal run to make the score 7-4, with Warner and Shannon providing goals in that stretch.
The Tigers led 7-1 after Casaceli's second goal with just more than 15 minutes gone in the game. The Tigers led 11-5 at halftime after Columbia's Warner controlled the draw in the final seconds and sent a long pass to Shannon, who scored on the fast break just before time expired.
Princeton scored on 19 of its 32 shots and outshot the Lions 22-9 in the first half. Katie Lewis-Lamonica, Mary Minshall and Anne Murray also had goals for Princeton, which tied a season high with its 19-goal performance. Princeton had also scored 19 goals in wins over Rutgers and Harvard.
All 28 Tiger players who dressed saw action in the game. Colleen O'Boyle played the first half in goal for Princeton, saving three shots, including two on free-position opportunities. Kaitlyn Perrelle had two saves in 30 second-half minutes.
The Tigers play Brown tomorrow afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium (3 p.m.) to conclude their Ivy League season. Princeton will finish alone in third place in the league standings with a win against the Bears.
