Softball to Face Cornell Home-and-Home as Division Race Nears Finish
April 25, 2007 | Softball
PRINCETON, N.J. ? Their mission is difficult, but at least it's clear. With a split last weekend against Penn, the Princeton softball team kept its Ivy South title hopes alive and will have a home-and-home series with Cornell this weekend.
The Tigers will visit Cornell Friday for a noon doubleheader before the Big Red return the visit Sunday, also for a noon twinbill.
Princeton must win all four games at Cornell to finish tied with Penn and force a one-game playoff, which would be played at Princeton, for the Ivy South title and a berth in the Ivy League Championship Series.
Records: Princeton 20-27, 10-6 Ivy; Cornell 30-11, 11-5 Ivy
Head Coaches: Princeton ? Maureen Barron (seventh season, Princeton '97); Cornell ? Dick Blood (12th season, Plymouth State '75)
Fields: Niemand-Robison Softball Field (Cornell, Friday); Class of 1895 Field (Princeton, Sunday)
All-Time Series: Princeton leads 20-9
Last season: The teams split a doubleheader at 1895 Field
Last time at Cornell: Princeton swept a doubleheader in 2005
Forecast: Mid 60s, chance of showers Friday; high 60s and sunny Sunday
Here are the scenarios for each outcome of the Princeton-Cornell series:
Princeton wins 4, Cornell 0: The Tigers finish 14-6 and enter a one-game playoff at Princeton for the division title.
Princeton wins 3, Cornell 1: Penn wins the division by a game as Princeton finishes 13-7, and Cornell 12-8.
Princeton wins 2, Cornell 2: Penn wins the division by a game as Cornell finishes 13-7 and Princeton 12-8.
Cornell wins 3, Princeton 1: Cornell finishes 14-6 and enters a one-game playoff with Penn in Philadelphia.
Cornell wins 4, Princeton 0: Cornell finishes 15-5 and wins the division outright.
The Ivy North also poses an interesting finish, as Harvard stands one game ahead of Dartmouth as those teams play a four-game set. The teams can't finish tied, so whichever team wins the series wins the division. A split in the series gives the division to Harvard.
Princeton in the circle: The Tigers used each of their top three pitchers in last weekend's Penn series, including junior Kristen Schaus (9-12, 3.39 ERA), freshman Jamie Lettire (8-7, 3.48) and senior Calli Jo Varner (3-8, 5.00). Lettire got a relief win in game two Saturday against Penn, striking out five in three innings, while Schaus threw in three of the four games, picking up the win in the fourth game of the weekend. Varner threw in both games Saturday, getting the start in the nightcap.
600 and counting: With nine strikeouts in the series opener last weekend, Schaus passed head coach Maureen Barron (596 Ks) for second place on the all-time career strikeout list. Schaus finished the game with an even 600 and enters this weekend at 606. She has 145 strikeouts this year and could challenge the record held by Erin Snyder '06 at 819 with a solid senior season. Each of Schaus' first two seasons featured more than 200 Ks.
Princeton at the plate: Three Tigers are over .300, including Erin Miller at .379 (25 of 66), Brianna Moreno at .353 (49 of 139) and Kathryn Welch at .325 (40 of 123). Princeton's top two home run hitters are Calli Jo Varner with six and Jamie Lettire with five.
It is high, it is far...: Princeton has clubbed 22 home runs this season ? 16 by non-seniors ? making it the fifth time in the last six seasons Princeton has hit more than 20 home runs. That includes every 20-home run season in program history.
Cornell at the plate: The Big Red are a strong hitting team, batting .314 with six regulars over .300. Jenna Campagnolo leads that group at .382 (47 of 123) while Alyson Intihar has a team-best 34 RBIs and nine home runs to go with her .349 batting average. Cornell has outscored its foes 219 to 130 on the season.
Cornell in the circle: Cornell carries a 2.16 ERA into the weekend with two pitchers having thrown 261 of the team's 272 1/3 innings. Haley Mirrer carries a 13-4 record and 1.71 ERA, while Jenn Meunier is 16-6 with a 2.04 ERA.
