Brett Westgarth Signs With AHL?s Syracuse Crunch
April 03, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
Princeton senior defenseman Brett Westgarth recently signed with the American Hockey League's Syracuse Crunch, the top minor league affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Westgarth will join the Crunch for the remainder of their 2006-07 season.
Westgarth signed an Amateur Try-Out (ATO) contract, which allows a team to sign a college player after the college season ends and after the league's trade deadline. Westgarth's new team, the Crunch, has two weeks left in their regular season.
“We are very happy for Brett and wish him the very best in his professional hockey career,” says Princeton Head Coach Guy Gadowsky. “Although Coach Hitchcock already knows this, Brett will bring a big body and a big shot combined with surprising quickness to the Columbus Blue Jackets organization.”
Ken Hitchcock, a veteran NHL coach, who volunteered with the Princeton men's hockey team three seasons ago during the NHL's work stoppage, currently coaches Syracuse's parent-club Columbus.
Westgarth completed his Princeton career in early March. He tallied a career-high 11 points in each of his past two college seasons. This season all 11 points came as assists. He finished his career with 114 games played. He scored four goals and had 20 assists for 24 points on the Tiger blue line.
He becomes the third member of Princeton hockey's Class of 2007 to sign a pro contract. Kevin Westgarth and Darroll Powe both signed with AHL teams. Westgarth has played in eight games for the Manchester Monarchs, tallying an assist and collecting 44 penalty minutes. Powe has appeared in six games for the Philadelphia Phantoms and has a goal and an assist for the club.
