Princeton Softball to Host Harvard, Dartmouth to Open Home Schedule
April 05, 2007 | Softball
PRINCETON, N.J. – Looking to build on its 4-0 start to the Ivy League season, the Princeton softball team will host Harvard Saturday at noon and Dartmouth Sunday at 1 p.m. in the first games of the year at Class of 1895 Field for a pair of doubleheaders to close out inter-divisional play.
Records: Princeton 13-18, 4-0 Ivy; Harvard 11-9, 2-2 Ivy; Dartmouth 6-17, 2-2 Ivy
Head Coaches: Princeton – Maureen Barron (seventh season, Princeton '97); Harvard – Jenny Allard (12th season, Michigan '90); Dartmouth – Christine Vogt (second season, Harvard '94)
Field: Class of 1895 Field, Princeton
All-Time Series: Princeton leads Harvard 33-14 and Dartmouth 24-5
Last Season: Princeton split at Harvard and swept at Dartmouth, April 22 and 24
Streaks: Princeton 1 vs. Harvard, Princeton 4 vs. Dartmouth
Last time at home vs. Harvard and Dartmouth: Princeton split with Harvard and swept Dartmouth in 2005
Forecast: Mid 40s, partly cloudy both days
Good omen: It is the 14th time in Princeton's 26 seasons of varsity softball that the Tigers have started Ivy League play 4-0. In 13 of those seasons, Princeton won the Ivy title.
Snagging one: The Tigers will be looking to break a curious trend this weekend. Princeton has played a doubleheader against Harvard and Dartmouth every year since 1995, the season before Dartmouth became a full varsity team. But despite Princeton's success over that period, the Tigers have swept all four from the Crimson and Big Green only twice, in 1995 and 1996.
R and R: Princeton is the only Ivy team not playing a midweek game this week. The break ends a stretch of 22 games in 17 days, stretching from the spring trip through the first Ivy League weekend.
Sweep to be home: Princeton has swept the home-opening doubleheader the last two years. In 2005, the Tigers took two from Fairfield and last season, Princeton swept Rutgers to open the Class of 1895 portion of the schedule.
Squeezin' out the hits: Kathryn Welch went 10 for 17 last week and really heated up in the last three games. In the nightcap against Brown and the doubleheader versus Yale, Welch was 10 for 13. Solely against Yale, Welch was 7 for 9 with five RBIs and is the only Princeton player this season to go 4 for 4, doing so in the last Yale game.
Ms. Clutch: Welch is Princeton's RBI leader with 20 of the team's 85. While she also became Princeton's average leader with a big weekend, it is her knack for timely hitting that has netted her the RBIs. Welch is batting .517 (15 of 29) with runners in scoring position, .857 (6 of 7) with runner on third and less than two out, and has converted on both opportunities with the bases loaded.
It's a team thing: All 14 Tigers to have an at-bat have a hit and an RBI this season, and eight Tigers have more than 10 hits in the team's 31 games this year. Ten players have contributed to Princeton's 24 doubles.
Finding her swing: Collette Abbott has gotten the ping back in her bat of late, getting a hit in six of the last nine games. The rookie infielder started her career with 12 hits in her first eight games.
No time to waste: Jamie Lettire, a rookie pitcher and first baseman, won her first overall start on Mar. 17 against Buffalo. She continued the positive trend of firsts last weekend, winning her first two Ivy starts.
Miller time: Sophomore Erin Miller had her first collegiate hit Mar. 10 against Rhode Island and has continued hitting. She has a hit in eight of the 13 games in which she has an at-bat, leading to a .321 average.
Mo' likely: Speedy sophomore Brianna Moreno has a hit in 21 of 31 games this season, also carrying Princeton's longest hitting streak of the year. She hit in seven straight games on the spring trip, from Mar. 20-23.
KKKKKristen: Junior Kristen Schaus could become the second pitcher in as many seasons to top her head coach's career strikeout record. Erin Snyder '06, who passed Maureen Barron's total of 596 early in her senior season, ended up with 819. Schaus has 558 at present, with the rest of this season and all of next year to go.
Gimme five: With her start Sunday against Yale, Schaus moved into a fifth-place tie on the career list for games started in the circle. She now has 66, with Barron holding the record of 109. Snyder finished with 86.
Sure as Steel: Stephanie Steel had seven hits in Princeton's six games last week, driving in four runs.
Harvard/Dartmouth last weekend: Last weekend in New England, Harvard got by Penn, 6-3 and 9-6, before Columbia swept the Crimson, 2-1 and 6-2. Dartmouth eked out a pair of 1-0 wins over Columbia Saturday, but was overwhelmed by Penn Sunday, 14-0 and 11-4.
Harvard at the plate: The Crimson are hitting .288 as a team with five players over .300. Lauren Brown leads the group with a .408 average (29 of 71), while Lauren Murphy is at .339 (20 of 59) with a team-best 23 RBIs.
Harvard in the circle: Shelly Madick and Dana Roberts are Harvard's two likely starters. Madick is 5-3 in a team-high 60 2/3 innings, but has a 1.15 ERA while having a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 54 to 25. Madick also won a 1-0 game over Princeton's eventual Ivy Pitcher of the Year winner, Erin Snyder, last season at Harvard. Roberts is 2-4 with a 3.71 ERA.
Dartmouth at the plate: The Big Green's opponents are outhitting Dartmouth .298 to .216, and Dartmouth has two batters above .300. Kelly Fry is the only Big Green player to start all 23 games, and she leads the starters with a .323 average and eight of the team's 20 doubles.
Dartmouth in the circle: Two pitchers – Stephanie Trudeau and Angela Megaw – have thrown 138 of the team's 147 innings. Trudeau has 81 of those with a 4-9 record and 4.06 ERA. Megaw is 2-5 with a 5.28 ERA.
