Women's Lightweight Crew Bests Central Florida and MIT
April 07, 2007 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
The women's lightweight crew team hosted - and outrowed - upstart programs MIT and the University of Central Florida on Saturday on a windy, choppy, and cold Lake Carnegie. The Tigers had a strong showing against Bucknell's open weight squad last weekend, but finally got the chance this weekend to flex their muscles against fellow lightweight squads. And flex their muscles they did. The varsity eight boat won the 2,000-meter race in 7:37.0, nearly 20 seconds ahead of second-place UCF and 25 seconds in front of MIT. The second varsity eight rowed in the same race, and bested MIT's first varsity eight boat by two seconds.
The Tigers also won the varsity 4 'B' and novice eight races. The varsity 4 'B' boat finished in 8:47.4, nearly 35 seconds ahead of runner-up MIT, which finished in 9:21.1. UCF did not enter a novice eight, but Princeton won the race against the two novice boats that MIT entered.
"We were very pleased to establish this race with two programs that are strongly committed to women's lightweight rowing," head coach Paul Rassam said afterwards. "We hope to continue this three-team race in future years. I was particularly impressed with our V4 B boat. Despite a less than ideal preparation period these athletes were able to throw down a hard and aggressive race piece.
"The novice boat seems to be coming along nicely," Rassam added. "The complete novices in the boat are making huge strides and Jeremy seems to have them ready for the many challenges they will face at the Knecht Cup next weekend."
While the novice women will compete at the Knecht Cup on Cooper River, the first- and second-varsity boats will travel to Redwood Shores, Calif., to compete at the 2007 Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic. The 1V will compete three times, beginning Saturday at 11:16 a.m. PST in a rematch with Central Florida. The 1V will also compete with Loyola (Saturday, 5:24 p.m.) and Stanford (Sunday, 11:32 a.m.), while the 2V will compete against the California 3V (Saturday, 12:34 p.m.) and Arizona St. (Sunday, 10:04 a.m.).
