May 01, 2007 | Softball
PRINCETON, N.J. -- While saluting its trio of seniors, the Princeton softball team capped its season with a pair of wins over local rival Rider at Class of 1895 Field Tuesday afternoon.
Princeton finished its season with a record of 24-29, while Rider, which will end Metro Atlantic regular season play this weekend, stands at 7-34. Calli Jo Varner, Stephanie Steel and Betsy Allaway, the three members of the Princeton softball Class of 2007, ended their careers with the twinbill sweep.
Game 1: Princeton 4, Rider 0
Calli Jo Varner threw a three-hit shutout to propel Princeton to a 4-0 win in the opener.
Princeton picked up a run each in the first and fourth innings and added a pair in the sixth as no Rider runner got past second base.
Varner (4-8) struck out eight while allowing two walks and a hit batter along with the eight hits.
In the bottom of the first, following a walk to Stephanie Steel and a single by Brianna Moreno that got Steel to third, Kathryn Welch picked up a sacrifice fly RBI for the early 1-0 lead.
Three innings later, Jamie Lettire and Varner had back-to-back signles as Lettire scored on a failed fielder's choice on a ball hit by Collette Abbott, who had the RBI.
In the sixth, Moreno led off the inning with a single and came around to score two batters later when Lettire's comebacker was dropped at home plate. Abbott had her second RBI of the game later in the inning with a two-out double that scored Lettire.
Six Tigers split Princeton's seven hits with Moreno going 2 for 2. Rider starter Laci Landrum (1-5) earned two of the four runs, walking one in addition to the seven hits.
Game 2: Princeton 5, Rider 1
The Tigers jumped on Rider starter Laura Magliozzi early, hitting three home runs in a 5-1 win as Kristen Schaus tossed a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts.
Kathryn Welch blasted her sixth home run of the year in the first inning, cashing in a walk to Kelsey Quist. Two batters later, Calli Jo Varner hit homer number nine as Princeton pulled ahead 3-0.
Quist added a solo shot in the second inning, her fifth on the year, and Samantha O'Hara pushed the lead to 5-0 in the third with an RBI single that scored a leadoff walk to Varner.
Rider added its run in the sixth with two out when Tiffany Day-Neutill doubled home a leadoff single by Lauren Brunner.
Magliozzi (0-4) finished with eight hits and four walks allowed, earning all five runs. Seven Tigers split the eight hits, with Varner going 2 for 2 in her final collegiate game.
Schaus (12-14) allowed only a walk in addition to the three hits. Her 12 strikeouts moved her to 644 for her career, behind only Erin Snyder '06 on the all-time list with 819 and one year to chase the mark.
