Wrestling Squad Places Fourth In All-Academic Standings
May 10, 2007 | Wrestling
The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced its annual All-Academic Top 30 and individual All-Academic wrestling teams for the 2006-07 season, and Princeton was once again near the top of the team poll. Led by first-year head coach Chris Ayres, the Tigers placed fourth nationally with a 3.1890 team GPA.
"I am so impressed with the team's ability to continually place in the Top 5 of the NWCA all-academic team rankings," Ayres said. "Princeton is one of the toughest, if not the toughest, undergraduate school in the country, and for the members of this team to do so well in classroom, while training so hard in one of the most physically demanding sports, is just amazing."
Duke finished first, while Stanford and Brown edged out the Tigers for the rest of the top three spots. The rest of the Top 10 were Northern Iowa, Duquesne, American, Drexel, Northwestern and North Dakota State. Princeton, which has finished atop these standings multiple times in the last decade, placed third last season.
"It was very inspiring as a first-year coach at Princeton to see how much not only the wrestlers do on a daily basis, but all of the Princeton athletes," Ayres said. "Princeton is a unique institution and the individuals who participate in varsity athletics truly represent the ideals of the term 'Student-Athlete.' I am very happy that the wrestlers recieved recoginition for their hard work through this impressive finish in the All-Academic rankings."
