Five Tigers Honored on All-Ivy Softball Teams
May 15, 2007 | Softball
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Brianna Moreno, Jamie Lettire, Kathryn Welch, Kristen Schaus and Erin Miller were among 36 softball players chosen by the Ivy League softball coaches for the All-Ivy first team, second team and honorable mention, the league office announced Tuesday.
The coaches consider only a team's 20 Ivy League contests when choosing the all-league teams.
Moreno was named a first-team outfielder, making it 26 of 27 years of All-Ivy softball teams, including seven straight seasons, that Princeton has had a first-teamer. Moreno hit .369 while starting all 20 games, getting 24 hits in 65 at-bats. Nine of her 20 Ivy League games were multi-hit contests for the sophomore, including 3 for 4 efforts against Columbia and Penn. It is Moreno's first all-league honor.
Three Tigers earned places on the All-Ivy second team, including Jamie Lettire, Kristen Schaus and Kathryn Welch.
Lettire earned the all-league honor as the second team's "utility player" in her first season, contributing both in the circle and at the plate. Four of Lettire's 11 hits were home runs as she started all 20 games, hitting .220 with 15 RBIs. Pitching, Lettire racked up a 5-2 record and a 3.46 ERA, striking out 39 batters in 56 2/3 innings. She won her first four Ivy decisions, including both halves of the Dartmouth doubleheader.
Schaus, the Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2005 and a first-teamer in 2005 and 2006, kept her All-Ivy streak going as Princeton's ace. Schaus was 7-5 with a 2.37 ERA, fanning 78 batters in 68 innings. On the season, she had 183 strikeouts, moving her to 644 for her career with a year to catch former teammate Erin Snyder '06 at 819 for the overall record.
Welch, the 2006 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and first-team honoree a season ago, batted .433 with 22 RBIs, five home runs and seven doubles. In a three-game stretch with Brown and Yale, Welch went 10 for 13 with five RBI, starting a seven-game hit streak. She had another seven-game streak later in the Ivy season against Penn and Cornell. In an April 27 doubleheader against the Big Red, Welch had four hits in her first four at-bats of the opener, following it by cranking two home runs in the nightcap in a four-RBI game. Five of her six home runs on the season came against Ivy schools and all came since April 18.
Miller, a sophomore, hit .311 while starting 16 games and playing in 17. With her inclusion, all three Tigers to hit better than .300 were on the All-Ivy second team. Miller had three multi-hit Ivy games, including going 3 for 3 in a game against Penn. It is Miller's first all-league honor.
The Tigers finished 12-8 in the Ivy League's South division, compiling a 24-29 record overall.
