Men's Soccer Opens 2007 Season With Loyola
August 30, 2007 | Men's Soccer
The 2007 Princeton men's soccer season gets underway Friday night with a familiar opponent in an unfamiliar setting.
The opponent is Loyola, and that makes it nine straight seasons, and 11 of the last 12 years, that the teams have played. In the 10 meetings since that stretch started in 1996, the Tigers have lost just twice (4-2-4 overall).
The setting is Powers Field at Princeton Stadium, Princeton's temporary 2007 home during the construction of the new Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. Princeton will play eight home games on the FieldTurf this season, including Ivy games against Columbia, Cornell and Yale.
A live webcast of Friday night's game (7 p.m.) as part of the TigerZone, as well as live stats through XOS GameWatcher, will both be available at GoPrincetonTigers.com, the official website of Princeton athletics.
Team captains Matt Kontos and Kyle McHugh lead an eight-person senior class for Princeton, which finished 6-8-3 overall (1-5-1 Ivy) a season ago. Fellow senior Robbie Morgenroth should join with Kontos to provide a solid back line for the Tigers, while senior Dan Cummins had nine points for Princeton a year ago.
Of the 11 players who scored a goal last season for Princeton, nine return, including McHugh, who led the team with four assists, and sophomore Devin Muntz, who led the Tigers with four goals.
Nine freshman players will join the Tigers in 2007, the most of any class on the Princeton roster. The freshman class features players from seven states (California, New York, New Jersey, Minnesota, Missouri, Tennessee and Arizona).
The Tigers finished 5-3-2 in non-conference play a year ago, including a 3-1 victory over Loyola in Baltimore. Princeton trailed at halftime before tying the game on a goal by Cummins nine minutes into the second half and then going ahead with 18 minutes to go. Mike Jester added insurance for the Tigers with a goal in the 84th minute.
Loyola, led by eighth-year head coach Mark Mettrick, rebounded from a slow start in 2006 to finished 7-11-1 overall and 6-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Greyhounds were chosen to finish second in that league in 2007 in a preseason poll of the league's head coaches.
Both McHugh and Muntz earned second-team All-Ivy League honors a season ago for Princeton. Two other Tigers have earned All-Ivy honors during their Princeton careers; Kontos was an honorable mention pick in 2005, while junior Matt Care earned second-team honors as a freshman the same season.
Head coach Jim Barlow is in his 12th season on the bench for the Tigers. He needs three coaching victories to move into third place all-time at Princeton.
