Tigers Lose 1-0 Heartbreaker To Colgate In Men's Soccer
September 14, 2007 | Men's Soccer
Princeton dominated possession, shots and chances against Colgate at Powers Field Friday night but fell victim to a goal by the Raiders' Matt Leach with 5:13 left in the second half that gave his team a 1-0 men's soccer victory.
Leach gained possession 30 yards out from the Princeton goal and snuck a low shot on an one-on-one opportunity past Tiger goalie Joe Walter, though Walter did get a piece of the shot near the top of the box.
The Tigers (0-3) would pressure in the final minute and draw a Colgate foul with 30 seconds left, but Kyle McHugh's free kick attempt from just outside the box went over the crossbar on the restart and the Raiders (3-2) ran out the clock.
Princeton outshot Colgate 15-5, including 9-2 in the first half, and had 11 corner kicks to just two for the Raiders, including all seven corner kicks in the second half.
Colgate goalie David Cappuccio had five saves to earn the shutout, including a diving effort on a Matt Care drive about 10 minutes into the game. Princeton also had chances on corner kicks in the first half from Tim Sedwitz and Matt Kontos that were punched away by Cappuccio.
Brandon Busch, who came into the game as a substitute late in the first half, had a solid chance early in the second half for Princeton that went wide right and another drive that was blocked near the Colgate goal with 15 minutes left in the game.
The Tigers and Raiders were meeting in men's soccer for the first time. Colgate won its third straight game, two of which have come by 1-0 scores.
Princeton plays at Seton Hall Monday night (7 p.m.) before heading to California next weekend to face Stanford and Cal at the Stanford Invitational.
