Bucknell Nips Men's Water Polo 13-12 in Overtime
September 14, 2007 | Men's Water Polo
Sophomore Mark Zalewski scored six goals and senior Scott Syverson made 20 saves, but it wasn't enough as the 15th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team was defeated 13-12 in sudden-death overtime by 12th-ranked Bucknell on Friday night.
After jumping to an early 2-0 lead in the opening period, the Tigers held onto the lead through halftime, taking a one-goal edge to the break. Bucknell drew even in the third quarter and the third and fourth quarters, as well as the first two overtime sessions ended with the score deadlocked. Regulation ended with the score even at 9-9, and the score went to 11-11 after one overtime and 12-12 after the second.
In the third overtime, the first one where the first goal would win the game, Bucknell failed to convert on its first possession, but stole the ball from the Tigers mid-pool and counterattacked, scoring 40 seconds into the three-minute session to take the win.
While Zalewski led the way offensively with a career-high six goals, several other Tigers contributed to the effort in the tight game. Freshman Jeff Cole scored three goals, while Tiger leading scorer, senior Zach Beckman, scored twice. Although he didn't score, sophomore Gregor Horstmeyer played a strong game for the Tigers, notching two assists, four steals and drawing five ejections.
Syverson was also strong on the defensive end, making 20 saves to equal a Princeton record for saves in a game. His 20 saves also included a 5-meter stop in the game's opening minutes. The performance equaled the 20 saves that All-American goalkeeper Peter Sabbatini made against Navy on Nov. 28, 2003.
The game was Princeton's first league game of the season as Princeton now stands 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the CWPA Southern Division. Princeton resumes action with a non-league game late Sunday morning against MIT at 11 a.m., at DeNunzio Pool.
